The Phlebotomist provides expertise in blood draws and specimen preparation.
Their ability to put patients at ease while obtaining sufficient samples with minimal discomfort across a wide demographic is critical to delivering high-quality care for patients and partners.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge samples, record maintenance data, and update patient information.
- Collect and store specimens following established procedures.
- Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture or other specimen collection processes to patients.
- Demonstrate proper techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Verify and understand all physician orders.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and prepare specimens (labeling, centrifuging, splitting, and freezing) as required.
- Ensure 100% accuracy by checking all requisitions or computer labels against scripts.
- Package specimens for transport and store them at the required temperature.
- Follow procedures to maintain specimen integrity during transport.
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and wear appropriate PPE.
- Attend annual department training sessions.
- Answer phone inquiries and provide laboratory results when appropriate.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Proven experience in phlebotomy, including blood draws, venipunctures, and specimen handling.
- Proficiency in using straight and butterfly needles and handling various color-coded tubes.
- Familiarity with OSHA and DEP regulations.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Experience in a healthcare or clinical laboratory setting.
