Job Description
- Greets patients, verifies patient identity, and collects blood specimens using a variety of routine phlebotomy techniques (i.e. venipuncture, heel sticks, fingerstick). Takes all measures to assure patient safety, comfort and satisfaction with the procedure.
- Assures the integrity of blood specimens for laboratory testing through accurate selection of collection tubes and correct technique; demonstrates good judgement in the selection of the collection procedure/site; assures timely and accurate collection and delivery of blood specimens.
- Receives specimens and inputs test requests into Cerner based on Invision or physician orders; centrifuges and processes specimens as required. Draws and processes managed care samples according to department protocol
- Performs special draws from fistulas and grafts as assigned; follows special collection protocol for glucose tolerance tests as assigned.
- Follows all phlebotomy and department policies and procedures; documents phlebotomy and specimen processing procedures and quality assurance problems according to department protocol.
- Provides training in phlebotomy, accessioning/processing procedures to students, laboratory employees, residents or other designated personnel as needed.
- Maintains adequate levels of phlebotomy supplies to perform collection procedures; maintains phlebotomy tray and working area in an organized, sanitary condition at all times.
- High School Diploma or GED
- May require up to 1 year of technical or other specialized training, such as completion of a phlebotomy training program and a specialized training program in fistula/graft draw procedures.
- Requires the ability to read and write; and knowledge of grammar, and arithmetic including fractions and decimals.
- May require the use of standard office/medical equipment; and basic use of formulas, charts, tables, drawings and knowledge of their application.
