Job Description

PURPOSE AND SCOPE

The Assistant Director of Nursing/ Recruitment/Retention is a Registered Professional Nurse who plans, organizes, directs, coordinates, and evaluates nursing recruitment, retention, engagement activities through implementation and evaluation of recruitment policies and procedures of the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation. Within the scope of this position, the Registered Professional Nurse collaborates with nursing leadership, facility HR, and finance in the process of recruitment and retention.

Functional Duties And Responsibilities

A: Patient Care

  • Promotes nursing care based on American Nurses Association Standards of Care and all applicable standards.
  • Complies with regulatory agencies guidelines and mandates.
  • Promotes environment of safety through intra/interdepartmental collaboration, recruitment, and retention of appropriate staff.

B: Resource Management

  • In collaboration with Nursing Leadership, develops strategies to recruit, retain, and engage staff to ensure quality care while maintaining staff and patient satisfaction.
  • Devises and implements processes to expedite approval of vacancies
  • Participates in the interviewing and hiring process.
  • Responsible for the recruitment of nursing staff at open houses, job fairs,

schools and other venues.

  • Updates recruitment brochures, prepares advertisements specific to areas of

need in coordination with Division Nursing Administrator and Nursing

Leadership.

  • Coordinates the recruitment process of potential hires with Division Nursing

Administrator and others in order to expedite the interview and hiring process.

  • Maintains and updates vacancy listing and shares information with nursing

leadership.

  • Cognizant of start dates for new hires and the orientation process.
  • Meets with Chief Nurse Executive/Director of Patient Care Services on a

regular basis to discuss the progress/performance of new hires and retention of

staff.

  • Prepares an analyzed monthly status of recruitment/ retention/

engagement activities and submits report to facility nursing leadership and/or appropriate personnel.

  • Communicates with new hires to ensure job satisfaction.
  • Provides guidance on the implementation of the exit interview process.
  • Conducts exit interviews to gather data regarding job satisfaction; uses data to

identify strategies for engagement and improve retention of staff.

  • Maintains confidentiality of exit interview data.
  • Shares summary data with appropriate facility and agency personnel in developing evidence-based strategies to improve retention and engagement of staff.
  • Uses results of exit interview analysis as a factor in establishing agency action plans to achieve a diverse workforce within applicable laws and to improve the work environment.
  • Develops a system to analyze trends in recruitment and retention.
  • Facilitates Retention Council and assists in resolution of issues identified in

the council.

  • Actively participates in overall agency workforce planning
  • Actively participates in organizing Nurses Week activities.
  • Initiates nomination of exceptional nurse in the organization in different

nursing publications.

  • Appropriately utilizes budget pertaining to recruitment.
  • Attends and participates in scheduled HHC Nurse Recruiters Meetings

Professional Practice

  • Promotes nursing practice guided by the American Nurses Association Code for nurses.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary PI program (s)
  • Fosters positive public relations for Nursing Department/ Profession/Hospital.

C: Governance:

  • Interprets and supports hospital mission, goals, policies/procedures for staff, patient/family, and the community.
  • Participates in and supports hospital operations/functions as appropriate.
  • Communicates unusual or risk management issues to Associate Executive Director/Deputy Executive Director or designee.
  • Directs staff in implementing organizational and departmental standards, policies, and procedures.

Plans and coordinates recruitment/retention/engagement activities in collaboration with nursing leadership.

  • Identifies and monitors divisional budget requirement for human and material resources related to recruitment.
  • Promotes retention and engagement of staff through the use of employee and/or labor relations activities.
  • Establishes effective information management system for processing recruitment/retention/engagement activities within the Nursing Department.

D: Self-Development:

  • Evaluates own professional practice, seeks constructive feedback, and takes action to achieve goals identified in own performance appraisal.
  • Maintains competency by keeping abreast of current trends in health care, legislation, regulations, nursing practice, and recruitment.
  • Attends workshops/seminars relevant to recruitment and retention of staff.
  • Maintains membership in professional organization

Minimum Qualifications

  • Licensed and currently registered to practice as a professional nurse in New York State, plus (2) or (3), below.
  • Masters Degree in Nursing Administration, Education, Clinical Specialty or equivalent field and five years of satisfactory nursing experience, of which three years shall have been in a supervisory or teaching capacity; or a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing and six years of satisfactory nursing experience, four years of which shall have been in a supervisory or teaching capacity.
  • A satisfactory equivalent of education and experience. However, all candidates must be licensed and currently registered to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State.
