This position is located in the Division of Nursing Services, Branch of Internal Medicine Clinic at the Gallup Indian Medical Center (GIMC), Gallup, NM. The Nurse (HIV/AIDS) is responsible for outpatient health care delivery to patients affected by Human Immunodeficiency (HIV)/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). This will also include managing patients who may temporarily be in an inpatient setting.

Provides direct nursing care for the HlV/AIDS program in the clinic. Conducts nurse field visits as indicated by the population needs.

Provides care, preventive services, and counseling including guidance in nutrition, exercise, wellness teaching, HIV transmission prevention, substance abuse prevention and self-management education. This specifically includes but is not limited to information regarding disease process, medications and side effects. Promotes responsible behavior and implements plans to further enhance patient/family understanding of medical problems.

Recognizes the need for reassessment by the physician or other sub-specialist healthcare professional. Documents services, data, patient assessment and care plan in an acceptable form in the medical record and registry.

Acts as a liaison and collaborates with medical providers, specialty service providers, and nursing staff to develop treatment protocols, standards of practice and policies. The incumbent will participate in ongoing quality improvement activities, including audits, chart reviews, development of review criteria, and development of plans for performance improvement set out within the Internal Medicine Department.

Develops and maintains a registry of the high-risk patients and a disease specific registry of patients with HIV/AIDS.

Submits quarterly progress reports to the Indian Health Service HIV consultant at headquarters to ensure future funding. Assures that new HIV positive cases are report to the state departments of health and promptly enrolled in care.

Obtains information and educational handouts for patients with targeted illnesses and conditions. Works closely with the Infectious Disease Specialist and other physicians to ensure that adequate and accurate patient education is being provided and is available.

Acts as a patient advocate and demonstrates cultural sensitivity.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S) :

Education:

A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing. This education must have been accredited by the , , , or an accrediting body recognized by the at the time the degree was obtained.

Degree from Foreign Nursing School : Official certification from the is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools. Experience:

The work experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. At the GS-09 and above grade level, many positions may require experience in a specialty area of nursing.

Licensure:

For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the . In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Basic Requirements for the GS-11 (or equivalent) Grade Level In addition to the above requirements, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

Successful completion of a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing educational program or related medical science field; or

At least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-9 grade level) and possession of a diploma, associate degree, bachelor's degree, or master's degree from a professional nursing educational program.

In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below-

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

GS-11:

Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks:

Providing direct nursing care to the HIV/AIDS and STI patient population. Conduct field visits to rural areas as needed for high-risk patients. Community Outreach for education regarding HIV/STI prevention. Following up and locating those patients with HIV/STIs. Knowledge of the disease process, complications, and treatment options associated with each diagnosis. Knowledge of the medications used in treatment, their side effects, and the combinations used for treatment. Knowledge of the different labs drawn prior to treatments, different collection of specimens-blood, rectal swabs, throat swabs and anal paps. Knowledge of alcohol and drug abuse. Empathetic, compassionate, understanding with patients newly diagnosed with positive results.
