Overnight Counselor Camp Staff Positions (Syracuse, IN) – Girl Scouts

If making an impact on the lives of young people helps get you out of bed in the morning, join our Summer Camp Staff for a challenging and rewarding experience of helping girls grow confidence, character, and courage.  As a Camp Staffer, you will provide a blend of leadership, instruction, mentorship, and inspiration to campers while guiding them and sharing the joys and adventure of summer camp and program activities.

In addition, you will gain experience in curriculum facilitation, behavior management, effective communication, team building, risk management, child development, cooperative problem solving, and leadership. Depending on your role at camp, you may earn certifications for archery, low ropes, or lifeguarding. Already certified? Even better, you might qualify for additional pay!

No Girl Scout experience, not a problem! We are excited to diversify our staff to ensure representation for our campers.

Our camp is located in northeast Indiana. Camp Ella J. Logan was founded on Lake Dewart in Syracuse, Indiana in 1928. Camp serves about 60 girls per week (and a barn full of horses), and days are filled with trails and traditions that empower campers through intentional activity design and cooperative leadership. Join us for a summer of growth, memories, and a few silly songs.

This is seasonal summer employment (June 1 - July 22, 2025) which includes room and board. Must be 18 years old by June 1st.

Pay rate range: $280 - $350 weekly, less taxes and other deductions.

Position Summary:

Counselors will play a pivotal role in fostering camper growth and development throughout the summer program. This includes direct care responsibilities, such as shared living arrangements and mealtime, supervision, as well as active involvement in all program activities to support campers' learning and personal growth.

Essential Duties:

  • Directly supervise campers in their units, during activities, and throughout camp.
  • Assure that campers are always properly supervised and within GSUSA Ratio.
  • Implement and enforce camp safety policies and procedures.
  • Assist in implementing programs and activities that align with our mission and goals.
  • Lead and teach various activities, such as aquatics, nature, science, and arts/crafts.
  • Provide daily care for campers, including recognizing mental and physical needs and ensuring they have the proper gear for each activity.
  • Participate and respect personnel policies, GSUSA/GSNI-M, and ACA guidelines.
  • Be a role model to campers and staff in your conversations, attitude, and behavior.
  • Always show cooperative behavior with colleagues and supervisors.
  • Follow and uphold all GSNI-M safety and security rules and procedures.
  • Work well independently and as a team member.
  • Willingness to participate in ALL camp activities enthusiastically, providing support and guidance to those assigned as leaders.
  • Other duties as assigned to ensure GSNI-M goals and girls’ safety.

Education/Certification:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must pass reference checks, background, and sex offender registry checks.
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Prior camp experience
  • Understanding of child development and behavior management techniques.
  • Excellent organization, time management, and communication skills.
  • Ability to make sound judgments and handle emergency situations.
  • Good character, integrity, and adaptability.
  • Ability to collaborate with people of diverse backgrounds and abilities.

Essential Physical/Mental Requirements:

  • Occasional high stress situations may occur with campers and/or staff.
  • Walking, standing, bending, stooping, reaching, lifting, and carrying equipment.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions (rain, humidity, heat)

Site Specific:

  • The employee will work outside and live onsite at Camp Ella J. Logan with other staff, campers, and volunteers.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including weekends, as needed.
  • A commitment and passion for the Girl Scout Mission and an ability to effectively promote and communicate the Mission and Vision to external and internal stakeholders.
  • Willingness to become a member of GSUSA.
