Job Description:

• Collects capillary and venipuncture blood specimens from patients of all ages.
• Assists patients with non-blood collections and ensures specimen integrity through accurate patient identification, specimen labeling, collection steps, and specimen transport.
• Performs occasional point-of-care patient testing, such as glucose monitoring.
• Provides exceptional customer service.
• Performs patient identification and specimen labeling according to standard operating procedures.
• Understands phlebotomy processes and techniques to obtain quality blood specimens and ensure correct decisions regarding specimen collection.
• Performs, interprets, and reports point-of-care testing (e.g., glucose) and quality control.
• Processes laboratory and patient reports following standard operating procedures, including printing, recording, distributing, faxing, filing, and retrieving.
• Recognizes problems, takes appropriate action, documents issues and corrective actions, and notifies the supervisor promptly to avoid jeopardizing patient care.
• Actively communicates throughout the shift and manages priority requests courteously and efficiently to ensure effective department workflow.
• Follows up with STAT, ASAP, and Pre-op draws to ensure turnaround times are met.
• Performs other duties as assigned or needed to meet the needs of the department/organization.

Certifications:  

• Basic Life Support (BLS) within 90 days of start date, if working in the Emergency Department.

Experience:

• Minimum of 2 years.
