Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Cell and Tissue Biology Full Time 80508BR Job Summary Responsible for managing the administrative operations of an academic department, OR several small departments within a college, OR a medium to large non-academic department. The CAO oversees all activities related to departmental administration, including: IT, facilities, student services, contracts and grants, budgetary financial management and human resources. Manages a professional staff comprising professionals in various fields. Assumes accountability for decisions made by subordinates. Performs long and short term planning for function. Erroneous decisions or failure to achieve goals results in additional costs and personnel, and serious delays in overall schedules The Department of Cell and Tissue Biology participates in research and teaching activities within the School of Dentistry and broadly within other schools and the graduate divisions at UCSF. It had total revenue of approximately $16 million for fiscal year -2024. The Chief Administrative Officer reports directly to the Chair and indirectly to the School of Dentistry Finance Director and serves in an advisory capacity to the Executive Committee, the faculty, and members of the department. The CAO is responsible for short- and long-range planning under direction of the Department Chair and School of Dentistry Finance Director to promote the goals of the department and to maximize utilization of the available resources. The manager oversees all facets of the administrative operations and assures compliance with university and other applicable policies and regulations. Further, the manager establishes and implements effective and efficient management systems to ensure that University and department goals are met. This individual serves as a liaison between members of the department, other departments, the Dean's Office, campus offices, and external agencies. The CAO establishes and maintains timely and appropriate reporting mechanisms for the Department and School leadership regarding fiscal, personnel and other critical management areas. NOTE: This is a hybrid role - 3 days per week on-site. The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement. The salary range for this position is $105,900 - $206,300 (Annual Rate). The department was established in 2005 and currently includes 11 faculty with primary appointments of which 10 are ladder rank faculty and 1 emeritus faculty. Additionally, the department is home to numerous postdoctoral fellows as well as graduate students in programs ranging from Biomedical Sciences, Tetrad and Biophysics to Developmental & Stem Cell Biology and Oral & Craniofacial Sciences. Faculty in the Department of Cell and Tissue Biology investigate basic molecular, cellular and tissue processes to achieve fundamental insights, and as a vehicle for understanding and treating disease, by focusing quantitative and mechanistic approaches on one or more of the following three broad research questions: 1. How are cellular organization and behavior across scales controlled by molecular and biophysical cues? 2. How is cell fate determined and maintained, and how are resulting cell and tissue morphologies and functions established? 3. How do biochemical and biomechanical signaling and other forms of cell communication transmit information? Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience/training. At least seven years of progressively responsible academic and financial management experience or equivalent a combination of education and experience. Experience managing research grants, working with extramural funds, and maintaining compliance with agency and University controls/policies. Proven leadership ability and significant supervisory experience in managing a sizeable group of researchers, technical staff, administrative personnel, etc. Broad knowledge of the organization's processes, protocols and procedures with a focus on budget, account and fund management and / or personnel management under labor contract(s) and personnel policy. Broad knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques; human resources and risk management planning; and / or accounting and payroll. Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to influence/persuade all levels of staff. Skills in organization and customer service to effectively manage multiple important priorities. Proven ability to organize department work functions in an efficient and effective manner. Broad knowledge of common organization-specific and other computer application programs. Skills to work collaboratively with other locations. Proven skills to quickly evaluate complex issues and identify multiple options for resolution. Demonstrated management and conflict resolution skills to effectively lead and motivate others. Critical thinking paired with strong skills in teamwork and use of judgment in determining priorities. Ability to use tact and diplomacy in planning, problem-solving and decision-making. The ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of personalities and constituent groups. Preferred Qualifications Graduate degree in business or public administration, finance, organizational development, educational administration, or related field. Knowledge of UC and UCSF-wide policies, procedures and education systems.
