If so, you might be a great fit for the City's current open Auditor position While specific tax experience is desirable, it is not required for consideration and can be taught. General responsibilities for this role include use tax auditing and other financial analysis; focusing on compliance for lodging taxes, including internet-based vacation rental platforms to ensure compliance with city ordinances. Position works under the general supervision of the Finance Director.Essential Job Functions: Use Tax Schedules and conducts audits of final reconciliation returns for use tax. Communicates audit process to taxpayer and/or contractor. Gathers and evaluates sufficient records to provide an adequate basis for determining the accuracy of the tax returns filed to verify payments and request for funds. Prepares correspondence regarding audit scheduling, documentation, payment agreements, and follow up. Communicates audit results to taxpayer or taxpayer representatives both orally and in writing. Sales Tax Schedules and conducts audits of local and certain identified out of area taxpayers. Audits returns, books, accounts, and records of private businesses to determine sales/lodging/use taxes and prepares summary reports of findings. Prepares correspondence regarding audit scheduling, documentation, assessments, payment agreements, and follow-up. Reviews returns, including supporting documentation, to verify payments and requests for refunds. Reviews delinquent accounts and pursues collection. Emphasis on vacation rental enforcement from on-line booking platforms. Real Estate Transfer Tax Reconciles RETT receipts to Pitkin County Clerk and Recorder records. Performs monthly reconciliation to receipt log maintained by the Finance Window staffer (Cashier). Customer Service Serves as back-up to respond to internal and external tax related inquiries. Researches and resolves notices or issues as requested. Supports in the research of tax issues. Technical Accounting Functions and Special Projects May work on general ledger accounts, month-end & year-end closing. May make recommendations for increased productivity/efficiency and internal controls. Support in the maintenance and accuracy of data housed and exported from the City's online software platforms around business licenses, sales and lodging taxes, and vacation rental permits. Works with outside vendor to correct issues associated with these systems. Accounting: Knowledge of and ability to use the principles and practices of basic accounting functions, including the current GAAS (Generally Accepted Auditing Standards) and GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) standards, and an understanding of relevant laws and regulations. Policies & Regulations: Knowledge of the principles and practices of municipal accounting. Including applicable state and local laws relating to business licensing including the City of Aspen Tax Code, fiscal policies and regulations. ________________________________________ Minimum Qualifications: Education: Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or related field. Experience: Two years of professional accounting/auditing experience. Technical Knowledge: Must be proficient in the following areas: Microsoft Outlook Email, Excel, and a basic understanding of computers and online computer-based technology applications, which includes accessing web based platforms. Proficient in financial functions in Oracle Cloud ERP (or similar software) and/or ability to become proficient within first six months Licenses & Certifications: Must possess a valid Colorado Driver's License or be able to obtain one within 30 days of start date. NOTE: Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required abilities, knowledge and skills as determined by the City of Aspen may be substituted for the requirements above. NOTE: This position requires a Criminal Background Check upon hire. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a Criminal Background Check. Position Type and Work Hours: Regular full time, hours may vary with workload. Evenings/Weekends will occasionally (monthly) be required depending on department needs and special projects.
