The DirectML Platform Team in the Core Operating Systems organization places Microsoft's best innovations in machine learning and AI in the hands of millions of Windows developers worldwide. The DirectML Team is responsible for driving platform innovations for machine learning across the graphics processing unit (GPU) and the neural processing unit (NPU) on various hardware architectures at the scale of the Windows ecosystem. Our platform, built on the DirectML core operating system stack is at the heart of the Windows Copilot Runtime. It helps power countless machine learning workloads from computer visions, audio and video to the latest generative AI models. Our mission is to realize the Windows Copilot PC vision and make Windows an AI-first PC for developers by delivering breakthrough technology that will help drive Microsoft's leadership in AI for years to come. We are a learn-it-all team with passion and specialty in designing high-performance systems and tools that leverage cutting-edge hardware capabilities from optimized GPU compute kernels to dedicated AI processor architectures on the NPU. We are looking for a Principal Software Engineer - DirectML Platform with industry experience in machine learning technologies including models, compilers, runtime, and tools with emphasis on the NPU, and/or hardware compute stack with a growth mindset and the desire to learn it all to help build a highly efficient ML runtime compiler and the execution engine in the DirectML platform. Responsibilities As a Principal Software Engineer - DirectML Platform, you will be responsible for the following: Leads efforts and discussions for the architecture of aspects of products/solutions. Drive co-engineering efforts with industry partners to deliver durable, scalable, and high-performance designs and platform solutions. Collaborate with engineers from within or outside the team, within or outside of Microsoft, to build and maintain existing and future features of the DirectML platform on various hardware architectures. Develop and maintain highly reliable and scalable conformance and performance benchmark systems that run across diverse hardware architectures. Creates and applies metrics to drive the quality and stability of code, as well as appropriate coding patterns and best practices. Work with open-source developers and communities to maintain and advance DirectML and Microsoft platform leadership in AI technology and tooling. Model a great example of engineering excellence and product quality in all aspects of software development and partner collaboration. Independently creates and mentors others for a clear and articulated plan for testing and assuring the quality of solutions, and defines success for outcomes of tests. Qualifications Required Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6 years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++ or C# OR equivalent experience. Other Requirements Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter. Preferred Qualifications: Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8 years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python. Hands-on experience in the design and implementation of ML compiler, kernels, or runtime features in publicly released developer-oriented software products with sizeable customer segments. In-depth experience and knowledge in operating system development in either user-mode or kernel-mode development. A proven track record of significant technical leadership in research and development of ML platforms or frameworks technology. Prior experience in the design and development of ML hardware microarchitecture or accelerators in real-world products. Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.
