Assistant Dean of Strategic Financial Management, Chief Financial Officer (CFO)

Position Dimensions and Impact to the University:

The Assistant Dean of Strategic Financial Management serves as the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for the University of Washington School of Nursing. This senior leadership position is responsible for the strategic oversight, management, and direction of all financial operations within the School. The Assistant Dean will work closely with the Dean, senior leadership, and key stakeholders to ensure the financial sustainability and growth of the School of Nursing. This role will also contribute to the overall strategic planning and decision-making processes, ensuring that financial considerations are integrated into all aspects of the School's financial operations.

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Strategy and Planning (25%): Develop and implement a comprehensive financial strategy that aligns with the School of Nursing’s strategic goals and objectives. Lead long-term financial planning and forecasting efforts to ensure financial stability and sustainability. Advise the Dean and senior leadership on financial matters, including budgeting, resource allocation, and risk management. Develop and maintain academic program revenue projection models in support of the School's long-range strategic planning efforts.

Budget Management and Resource Allocation (25%): Oversee the core business processes associated with planning, management, and accounting for the School’s resources. Ensure that budgetary processes and allocation of resources are transparent, inclusive, and aligned with strategic priorities. Monitor financial performance and provide regular reports and analyses to the Dean and other stakeholders. Lead efforts to optimize resource allocation and utilization across the School. Develop and implement cost-saving initiatives and identify opportunities for revenue generation.

Financial Operations and Compliance (25%): Responsible for all financial operations, including accounting, financial reporting and procurement. Ensure compliance with university policies, internal and external audit programs, state and federal regulations, and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). Oversee the management of the School’s endowments, grants, contracts, and other financial assets. Identify and mitigate financial risks, ensuring the School’s financial health and sustainability. Develop and implement internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure accurate financial reporting. Prepare reports for the Executive Team as needed and provide data for annual surveys and the periodic School re-accreditation process.

Leadership and Team Development (25%): Serve as a key member of the School’s leadership team, contributing to strategic planning and decision-making. Collaborate with academic and administrative leaders to support the financial needs of various programs and initiatives. Lead and manage the School’s finance team, providing direction, support, and professional development opportunities. Foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment that promotes excellence in financial management. Deliver presentations on complex financial and/or operational topics to a wide variety of stakeholders. Perform other duties as required to support the ongoing mission and strategic plans of the school.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Master’s degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, or related field with strong emphasis on quantitative analysis. 4-5 years of demonstrated experience with financial stewardship and leading strategic financial planning and management processes at an academic institution or complex large-scale organization. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Conditions of Employment: Eligible for Hybrid. This position will benefit from the telework policies that provide flexibility in work location with a hybrid schedule of in-person and remote options. Due to the broad range of responsibility, this position experiences many externally imposed deadlines and must be flexible and available.
