Job Description:

The Pharmacy Technician Trainee demonstrates consistent application of knowledge and skills in assisting the pharmacist in the execution of appropriate, safe, efficacious, efficient, and cost-effective pharmaceutical care. The incumbent participates in many procedural aspects of pharmacy practice under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist and is an integral part of the pharmacy team. Caregivers in this position will receive paid on the job training and are expected to practice in compliance with pharmacy technician trainee licensure.
The Pharmacy Technician Trainee will be enrolled in an approved program and complete coursework to become a licensed pharmacy technician. Upon completion of the program the trainee is required to submit for licensure. It is expected that any trainee will complete coursework within one year of starting the program. Technician trainee will be paid for practical experience. Didactic coursework will be completed by the technician trainee outside of working hours and is not compensated. Trainee may be required to work weekends, nights, and holidays.
The Pharmacy Technician Trainee will prepare medication orders, receive prescriptions, complete required paperwork, assist with billing, stock medication, and deliver medication to patients. Supports patients, pharmacists, pharmacy students, pharmacy technicians, and other healthcare professionals in relevant areas of responsibility. Communicates effectively with all caregivers and stakeholders regarding responsibilities and identified concerns. Competently and effectively learns technical responsibilities as assigned and seeks appropriate training and peer feedback on routine responsibilities. The Pharmacy Technician Trainee understands and complies with state and federal laws, regulations, policies and procedures, and guidelines related to their specific area of practice and participates and supports financial responsibilities of the department, facility, and Intermountain Healthcare. Responsible to provide delivery of medications, information, and services in a professional, timely manner and to seek a team approach to developing and achieving best practices and processes. Consistently attains appropriate supervision and accuracy checks by the pharmacist(s) and clearly understands when a pharmacist is required to verify tasks and activities to deliver detail-oriented, consistent, and flexible care.

Those applying for this position must currently be in a Pharmacy Technician Program. Prior communication from their program director and a leader with the Intermountain Medical Center Inpatient Pharmacy staff will need to happen prior to candidate interview.

This Technician-in-training position will be utilized be for completion of the 180 – 220 hours required for the completion of a Pharmacy Technician program and state licensure through the Division of Professional Licensing for the State of Utah. This position will compensate the Technician-in-Training during the completion of these training hours. At the completion of the required hours the Technician-in-Training will need to apply for an open position within the department, if available. This position will only guarantee the 180 – 220 hour required by the Pharmacy Technician Program. Prior to application to this role please have your Pharmacy Technician Program Coordinator contact a member of the Intermountain Medical Center Inpatient Pharmacy Technician Leadership.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidate will enroll or be enrolled in an accredited Pharmacy Technician training program
  • Must apply for Pharmacy Technician Trainee License within 4 weeks of hire date and obtain within 8 weeks of hire
  • Demonstrated basic computer skills and attention to detail

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Customer service experience
