USAC administers the $10 billion Universal Service Fund, which the FCC created to address serious gaps in needed coverage. We deliver funds through four programs (Schools & Libraries, Lifeline, Rural Healthcare and High Cost), to people and places who need it most - rural, hard-to-reach communities, low income households and schools and libraries who need access to facilitate learning. Your Role The intern would be assigned to work with the Enterprise Architecture team in one or more of the following areas: Software Engineering, or Database Modeling and Implementation, or Business and Technology Architecture Diagramming/Modeling It's expected that the intern will present as a candidate in only ONE of the above areas where their skills are best suited. Of course, the candidate should mention skills related to the other two (2) areas. This is an excellent opportunity to work in a fast-paced environment and a collaborative team. The Intern will participate in USAC sponsored activities, training opportunities and networking events. Software Engineering skills and duties required Skills University training in one of the major programming languages - Java, .NET, Python Ability to learn and apply programming skills in specific Commercial-Off-The-Shelf Programming Languages like Atlassian/Jira, Microsoft Access, Microsoft PowerAutomate Ability to deliver application solutions as directed by the team on real-world projects Writing, Documentation and Diagramming skills Duties Perform Software Engineering tasks and deliver various products including working software and documentation Database Engineering skills and duties required Skills Database modeling for Relational Databases using a Database Modeling or diagramming tool Understanding of Logical, Conceptual and Physical Data Models Skills in lifecycle design and implementation Structure Query Language (SQL) skills using standard SQL tools Ability to generate reports from a Relational Database Ability to understand SQL Databases embedded in Commercial-Off-The-Shel Tools Ability to learn and apply database engineering and SQL skills in specific Commercial-Off-The-Shelf Programming Languages like Atlassian/Jira, Microsoft Access, Microsoft PowerAutomate Ability to deliver application solutions as directed by the team on real-world projects Writing, Documentation and Diagramming skills Duties Perform Software Engineering tasks and deliver various products including working software and documentation Business and Technology Architecture Diagramming/Modeling skills and duties required Skills Understanding of Enterprise Architecture components - Business Capabilities, Business Process, Applications, Middleware and Technology components with their relationships Skills in generating Business Process, Application and/or Infrastructure Component (server, firewall, router, storage, etc.) using a standard tool like Visio, Lucidchart or a tool from the University Databases using a Database Modeling or diagramming tool Database modeling for Relational Writing, Documentation and Diagramming skills Duties Review requests for diagramming/modeling tasks - Creation, modification, updating, organizing Perform diagramming/modeling tasks and deliver various products including documentation About You You are passionate about our mission to help Americans gain access to essential communications technology You are a problem solver with great attention to detail, can work with little supervision, multi-task, and learn quickly You are in a major relating to IT (Computer Science, Software Engineering, Cybersecurity, etc.), Technology Management, Business Management You have some exposure and experience with the Microsoft Office suite (PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, Word) You are a quick study, love brainstorming new ideas, and are eager to find solutions You are agile at working across other departments Current student in an accredited college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional, technical, vocational, and trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution The ability to make diagrams with Visio or other diagramming tools The ability to apply analytical skills to the meta data associated with Computer System Components (applications, databases, servers) Students pursuing Computer Science related Degree encouraged to apply Eligibility You must be at least 18 years on September 18th, 2024 to apply You must be a rising junior or senior student attending an accredited college or university, or a first-year post-graduate within the first year of your program. Nontraditional students may apply. Students must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher to remain eligible for the program. Interns must work for a minimum of 16 hours per week (and no more than 19 hours a week) in the USAC office in Washington, DC.
