Alumni and Stakeholder Engagement (ASE), working in a collaborative partnership with the UW Alumni Association (https://www.washington.edu/alumni/), fulfills its mission to advance higher education in the state of Washington and to support the UW through impactful, broad-based engagement with alumni, students, retirees and friends of the University. The Alumni & Stakeholder Engagement team has an exciting opening for a Director of Student & Alumni Engagement. This is a full-time, permanent position.
The Director for Student and Alumni Engagement leads the strategy, administration and evaluation of a comprehensive portfolio of student and alumni engagement events, programs and services within University Advancement’s Alumni and Stakeholder Engagement unit. This position reports to the Senior Director for Engagement Strategy and is responsible for building and strengthening affinity, engagement and belonging between and among UW students and alumni — with a focus on recent graduates — and the University of Washington through authentic, integrated and evidence-based practices.
A core priority for this position is to develop and retain authentic and inclusive relationships between the University and students and alumni . In recognition of the essential nature and profound impact of in-person engagement in meeting this goal , the Director maintains a minimum four-day, in-person schedule, which will include frequent and robust event participation , including multiple evenings and weekends per month within the diverse communities we serve. The Director supervises a team of two full-time staff members and 10–12 student employees; exercises independent budget authority; and is responsible for overall program assessment and evaluation.
What You Will Do: Program Development and Strategy (45%)
• Develop and implement strategic planning and identify measurable outcomes for Student and Alumni Engagement. • Integrate and advance diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB) and anti-racism goals and objectives into program strategy and implementation, including audience engagement and retention, program and content co-creation, and community-centric assessment and evaluation. • Build and maintain strong collaborative relationships with key internal and external partners. • Explore the development and implementation of a formalized Student Alumni Association (SAA)/Registered Student Organization (RSO) strategy and program. • Lead and oversee the comprehensive program strategy and administration for volunteer engagement, including the Graduates of the Last Decade (GOLD) Council and others. • Develop and implement programs and services that increase UWAA membership acquisition and retention and other relevant UWAA business development and revenue generating opportunities. • Develop and implement processes and procedures to establish measurable outcomes and effectively and efficiently assess program evaluation and performance.
Program Administration and Team Management (45%)
• Lead, manage and supervise a team of full-time staff and student employees, including recruiting, onboarding, training, general work supervision, professional development and performance assessment. • Effectively manage the Student and Alumni Engagement team’s workflow and workload to ensure program efficiency, effectiveness and impact. • Create and administer Student and Alumni Engagement budgets with delegated discretionary authority, ensuring comprehensive fiscal oversight, compliance and collaboration with ASE finance & administration staff. • In collaboration with ASE/UWAA marketing and communications colleagues, develop comprehensive and responsive marketing strategies for Student and Alumni Engagement programs and services. • In collaboration with ASE/UWAA Events colleagues, develop comprehensive and responsive event strategies for Student and Alumni Engagement programs and services.
Other Duties (10%) MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's degree AND five years of experience in student life, alumni relations, program engagement or program management or related field.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. What You Bring:
• Experience and established philosophy of supervision and management of staff and volunteers, including plans for training, retention, professional development, successful communication, and expectation setting. • Ability to work independently, problem solve, take initiative, set priorities and handle multiple projects efficiently and effectively. • Demonstrated creativity, organizational ability and strong attention to detail. • Ability to make decisions in ambiguous situations, exercise good judgment based on information and analysis in a fast-paced, dynamic, deadline-driven environment in an organized and professional manner. • Proficiency using PC computers and prevailing office management technology; familiarity and comfort with industry-standard CRM and/or other broad-based engagement software and tools. • Demonstrated computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office suite for correspondence, special reports, spreadsheets, databases, forms, etc.
