Overview:

The Position
As the Retail Strategist, you will be at the forefront of transforming the shopping and dining experience within D.C.s core area. Your role involves recruiting a diverse mix of store, food and beverage, and personal service operators that align with our vision for a vibrant retail environment. You'll build strong relationships with potential operators and landlords, match operators with ideal spaces, and support marketing and event activities.

Responsibilities:

Key Responsibilities

  • Retail Recruitment and Relationship Building: Identify and engage successful independent and national retail operators. Communicate our retail vision for the neighborhood and provide detailed information about available spaces
  • Pop-Up Attraction: Bring a variety of Pop-Up shops and experiential uses to the area
  • Liaison with Property Owners: Develop strong relationships with property owners and their representatives. Act as the main contact between them and your prospective tenants
  • Developer Relationships: Build relationships with developers launching new projects in the neighborhood
  • Database Management: Maintain a comprehensive database of tenant prospects and properties
  • Retailer Support: Guide prospective retailers from initial contact through to the grand opening of their stores
  • Retention Strategies: Advise on strategies to retain tenants, including advice on branding, social media, merchandising, and window displays
  • Marketing: Assist in creating engaging marketing materials for recruitment activities
  • Long-Term Planning: Contribute to strategic retail planning to adapt to changes in the neighborhoods built environment
  • Local Government: Work with the District government on programs to support retail


Qualifications:

Requirements

  • Experience: 8+ years in retail, restaurant, sales, marketing (especially social media), public relations, design, or related fields.
  • Retail Knowledge: Must demonstrate a deep knowledge of and enthusiasm for retail. Ability to lead retail strategy related to revitalizing the core area of DC
  • Relationship and Project Management Skills: Strong entrepreneurial and interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders. Ability to collaborate and negotiate with stakeholders to attract retailers to the neighborhood. Detail-oriented, proactive, and positive with a creative and innovative approach to problem-solving. Highly motivated with a strong work ethic, capable of managing multiple priorities and acting quickly
  • Communication: Excellent writing skills tailored to various audiences
  • Local Knowledge: Familiarity with downtown DC is a plus
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint; experience with Salesforce-based CRM and/or CoStar is desirable
