Under the direction of the Security Sergeant and Director of Security, the Behavioral Wellness Center’s Security Officer will perform activities involved in the day-to-day Security of the facility ensuring the protection of Hospital Buildings and premises to prevent fire, theft, and vandalism, and provide for the safety and security of employees, patients, and visitors in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensures only authorized personnel is admitted onto hospital premises.
  • Patrols buildings and grounds of hospitals to prevent fire, theft, and vandalism.
  • Inspects doors, windows, locks, and fire exit to determine the level of security.
  • Inspects incoming and outgoing parcels to protect property and prevent theft.
  • Inspects areas not in use to ensure that they are secured; logs any and all faults in the main log.
  • Unlocks secured doors for Hospital personnel according to Hospital policies.
  • Investigates incidents of unusual circumstances reported by staff, visitors, and patients/clients and completes incident reports/logs.
  • Utilizes appropriate de-escalation techniques to resolve security issues.
  • Detain/Restrains patients/clients when necessary.
  • Prepares incident reports when necessary and submits them to the Security Office by the end of the shift;
  • Responds to / Answers all Codes, Condition Red, Code 777, etc.
  • Properly completes appropriate logs by end of each shift (post, employee, visitor, key, access, etc)
  • Maintain established Hospital and department policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control.
  • Escorts visitors, patients, and employees to and from parking areas.
  • Assists patients/clients, employees, and visitors respectfully and in a professional manner.
  • Assist with traffic control by keeping fire lanes, fire hydrants,
  • Assist motorists who become stranded on hospital property.
  • Assist with traffic control by keeping fire lanes, fire hydrants, and ambulance entrances free of vehicles. Ensure only authorized vehicles are parked in Handicap spaces.
  • Perform random and scheduled bag or person search, as directed.
  • Escort visitors, patients, and employees to and from parking areas.
  • Cares for and maintains department supplies and equipment during the shift, and promptly reports any malfunctions in Security equipment.
  • Reports all safety, fire, or other hazards observed during routine patrols and inspections to Supervisor and in Post Log.
  • Maintains professional growth and development through in-services, educational programs, seminars, workshops, professional affiliations, etc.
  • Consults and keeps Sergeant informed of activities, incidents, needs, and problems on assigned shift.
  • Drives hospital vehicles when necessary.
  • Performs other duties as directed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Upon hire, must have a High School diploma or equivalent; current, valid Driver’s License with a clean driving record; and 1 year of Security or law enforcement experience. Bilingual capabilities and previous experience in a hospital or healthcare environment are a plus. Within 30 days of hire, successful and satisfactory completion of CPI or other de-escalation training is required. Valid PA ACT 235 Certification preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Must Possess:

  • Working knowledge of Security practices, tools, and de-escalation techniques;
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills; customer service skills and keen observation skills
  • Ability to
    • Handle and secure firearms turned in to the Security Office
    • speak, read and write in English;
    • exercise independent judgment in emergency situations;
    • maintain confidential information;
    • prepare logical and legible written statements, reports, and log entries
    • operate radio and telephone equipment and console monitors
    • walk the entire hospital campus (within 5 minutes) and negotiate stairs
    • briskly respond to emergency calls
    • perform a take-down, if necessary
    • maintain professional appearance and demeanor
    • maintain required competencies as demonstrated by successful completion of periodic discipline-specific competency evaluations.

TYPES OF EQUIPMENT USED: Basic office equipment; Monitors; Hand-held radios; Baton Wand; Handcuffs.
