Position Summary

Security/Patrol: Conducts building and grounds patrol of the University, to include academic buildings, sports arenas, fields, and residence halls. Although this position may have a stationary post at times, it is more often on the move, conducting foot patrol, mobile patrol, and/or bike patrol. Performs routine security checks of designated property requiring specialized security attention. Responds to fire alarm calls and related incidents as assigned. Responds to service calls as assigned such as, but not limited to, keys in vehicle, room lock outs, parking complaints, and escorts. Performs traffic control duties. Provides assistance to officers or other CSO's as needed. Opens and closes buildings for special events or other planned needs. Provides security at events. Community Relations: Is often the first face seen to students, staff, faculty, and visitors as CSO's patrol the campus. CSOs must work closely with other department CSO's and police officers, residence hall assistants, resident directors, and the overall University community and visitors. Reporting: Prepares concise and accurate reports of their involvement in incidents. Maintains a knowledge of department Standard Operating Procedures, statutes, and University Policies. Attends required in-service training to maintain proficiency in duties. Provides training to new CSO's as needed and completes documentation necessary for certifications.

Patrols University property, including buildings, parking lots and resident halls, on foot, bicycle or vehicles and in all types of weather. Check buildings during and after hours or where security zones have been established for security and safety needs.

Required Additional Qualifications:

Campus Security Officers (CSO) perform Public Safety and Security work on the University grounds, in buildings, traffic, and parking control on the campus according to policies and procedures set forth by the University of Nebraska Police and Public Safety Department. CSO's must have high integrity as the job requires honesty and ethical behavior when working with others, performing tasks, and with sensitive information. CSO's must know and be able to successfully complete Basic First Aid, CPR, AED, and PPCT. CSO's must possess skills or train to be proficient in self-defense, problem solving, de-escalation methods, and be able to document incidents accurately. The CSO must be physically able to perform duties and be proficient in general motor vehicle operations to complete required tasks. CSO's must be attentive to the public. Good eye contact and the willingness to greet the community is a must. The CSO must be attentive to others, be able to communicate clearly, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times. CSO's must also be able to take control of the conversation when the need arises. CSO's must be able to coordinate well with all members of the University. CSO's must maintain self-control as the job requires maintaining composure, keeping emotions in check, controlling anger and avoiding aggressive behavior, even in difficult situations. CSO's must be service oriented by actively looking for ways to help people.
