The Phlebotomist is responsible for performing blood draws and specimen preparation while ensuring a high level of patient comfort and sample integrity.
This role requires expertise in specimen handling, adherence to safety protocols, and effective patient communication to support quality care for patients across various demographics.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge samples, and handle specimen decontamination and maintenance data recording.
- Collect and store specimens according to established protocols, ensuring patient information is accurately updated.
- Clearly explain venipuncture and specimen collection processes to patients, using straight or butterfly needles as needed.
- Verify laboratory requisitions with specimen tubes, properly label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens per test requirements.
- Package and store specimens following required procedures, maintaining appropriate temperatures and ensuring specimen integrity during transport.
- Adhere to OSHA and DEP safety regulations and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Assist with laboratory-related inquiries and read laboratory results as needed.
- Participate in annual department training sessions and perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Proven experience in phlebotomy, including blood draws, specimen handling, and patient interaction.
- Knowledge of laboratory procedures, including labeling, centrifuging, and specimen packaging for transport.
- Familiarity with OSHA and DEP regulations.
- Strong attention to detail and adherence to specimen handling protocols.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in a healthcare or clinical laboratory setting.
- Ability to work with a diverse patient population and provide a high level of patient care.
