Touchette Regional Hospital is seeking a Travel Phlebotomist!!


Job Summary:

Oversees the activities of the Phlebotomist team and works with the Laboratory Services Director to provide coverage for various assignments, which include phlebotomy, maintaining laboratory files, handling of specimens/reports, processing outpatients, answering and directing phone calls to appropriate areas/personnel, and processing all specimens that come into the laboratory when needed to better serve the patients.

Functions and Duties:

  • Performs phlebotomy on all outpatients and inpatients as required, from neonate to geriatric patients, by finger stick, heel stick, or venipuncture for diagnostic testing as ordered by providers, including blood cultures
  • Interprets physician orders and order tests in appropriate system.
  • Follows proper identification practice and procedure for all patients’ phlebotomies
  • Records proper information on specimen labels as required by procedure. Including patients’ last and first names, date of birth, date and time of collection, and the initials of the phlebotomist
  • Performs routine collection rounds on time and within acceptable limits, including timed draws
  • Processes and centrifuges specimens and delivers to proper department, including reference lab orders and specimens for courier pickup
  • Sorts and processes specimens received by the laboratory and proficiently handle all specimens received in the lab
  • Coordinates a simultaneous series of tasks accurately, including STAT orders, fluctuation in workload, prioritizing work to complete within scheduled hours and established turnaround times
  • Responsible for clerical duties necessary to maintain high quality and efficient daily operations of the laboratory, including but not limited to, filing of laboratory orders, faxing of patient’s results, and assists with clinical/clerical laboratory functions as needed.
  • Assist in inventory and general maintenance of laboratory equipment. Orders phlebotomy and office supplies.
  • Reports to appropriate physician, nurse manager, or house supervisor any problems, delays, or occurrences that effect laboratory functionality.
  • Notifies appropriate nursing personnel and laboratory staff and properly documents when unable to collect specimens.
  • Performs all LIS (Laboratory Information System) functions and procedures per established protocols.
  • Adheres to hospital and laboratory policies; maintains confidentiality of patients and fellow employees and exhibits ethical behavior; ensures a professional appearance in compliance with dress code
  • Exhibits professionalism in actions as well as appearance. Demonstrates courtesy to patients, visitors and fellow employees.
  • Supports the mission, values and goals of the hospital and encourages the same through words and actions; shows accountability for own words and actions.
  • Accepts job assignments offered; follows lines of authority in reporting and dealing with problems; accepts supervision and direction; displays strong initiative and requires minimum supervision.
  • Adheres to all hospital and laboratory infection control and safety policies; performs annual employee review of infection control and safety policies.
  • Maintains clean and safe work environment; reports safety hazards and / or equipment malfunctions to Laboratory Services Director.
  • Follows hospital policy for reporting and treating work-related illness / injury; completes hospital incident report forms to report employee, patient or visitor unusual occurrences.
  • Serves as technical resource by participating in staff training; answering questions of other professionals; participating in educational opportunities.
  • Prepare or update standard operating procedure (SOPs) and policies in the Laboratory.
  • Demonstrates leadership responsibility and assists in maintaining the laboratory in the absence of the Laboratory Services Director.
  • Ensures appropriate phlebotomy staffing by creating the phlebotomy schedule and finding coverage as needed.
  • Participates in training new staff (phlebotomist and lab techs). Responsible for verifying completion of training checklists.
  • Maintains, tracks, and results certain reference testing, i.e. IDPH newborn metabolic screens
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant, Phlebotomy or equivalent program required.

Experience

  • 2-5 years phlebotomy experience required.

Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations

  • BLS certification, proof within 90 days.
  • De-Escalation and restraint training obtained during orientation period and maintained.
  • Certified Phlebotomist through a national accrediting body such as National Phlebotomist Association or American Society for Clinical Pathologists (preferred).

  • Basic Computer skills.
  • Capable of independent decision-making.
  • Ability to work well with professional and non-professional staff.
  • Communication – Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing.
  • Interpersonal Skills – able to work effectively with other employees, patients and external parties.
  • Basic Skills – able to perform basic mathematical calculations, balance and reconcile figures, punctuate properly and spell correctly.
  • Customer Service – must demonstrate ability to establish and maintain long term customer/patient relationships, and build trust and respect by consistently meeting and exceeding expectations.

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) (mask, gown, gloves) when required.
  • Moderately heavy lifting (≤25lbs) required while receiving and stocking supplies.
  • Be able to sit, stand, or walk for extend periods of time.
  • Be able to stoop, kneel, and/or crouch as needed.
  • Be able to perform repetitive motions with hands.

FLSA Statement:

This position is classified as non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Employees in non-exempt positions are entitled to receive overtime pay for any hours worked over 40 in a workweek in accordance with state and federal regulations.
