The Phlebotomist - I is responsible for performing blood draws, specimen collection, and laboratory tasks with a focus on accuracy, patient comfort, and adherence to safety protocols.
This role includes troubleshooting, workflow optimization, and handling various laboratory responsibilities to support high-quality patient care.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform blood draws, label specimens, and manage specimen processing, including centrifugation and data recording.
- Collect and store specimens following established procedures and protocols.
- Clearly explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients in a courteous manner.
- Demonstrate expertise with both straight and butterfly needles.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes, ensuring accuracy.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders, checking all test requisitions for correctness.
- Package and store specimens according to required temperature, maintaining sample integrity for transport.
- Adhere to OSHA and DEP regulations for laboratory safety.
- Attend department training sessions as scheduled.
- Answer calls and respond to inquiries about laboratory results.
Required Qualifications:
- Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment (as required).
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Minimum of 6 months of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- 2-4 years of experience in phlebotomy or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in specimen handling.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for patient interaction.
- Experience with laboratory procedures and safety protocols.
Education: High School
