Responsible for efficiently and accurately obtaining and preparing specimens for analysis and performing various screening tests.

Positions Directly Supervised: None
Regular Contact with: All Hospital departments, Physicians, and the public

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Phlebotomy certification preferred.
Work Experience: Phlebotomy experience desirable. Clinic or hospital experience desired.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Serves patients by identifying the best method for retrieving blood samples and other specimens, preparing specimens for laboratory testing, and performing screening procedures.
- Obtains blood specimens and collects nonblood specimens such as urine, sputum, and throat swabs for laboratory testing.
- Verifies patient identification and explains sampling procedures to patients.
- Reassures patients who are nervous about sampling procedures and applies dressings to wounds created by blood draws.
- Prepares specimens and delivers them to appropriate locations for testing.
- Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures, and observing isolation procedures.
- Verifies test requisitions and bring discrepancies to the attention of applicable personnel.
- Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the physician, nursing staff, or reference laboratory, referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification, and notifying supervisor of unresolved orders.
- Retrieves lab results and enters them into proper patient charts to be reviewed by the provider.
- Maintains a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures and complying with legal regulations.
- Understands rules and regulations set forth by Franklin Medical Center. Maintains a good working relationship with fellow employees, physicians, and patients.

- Excellent communication skills (oral and written)
- Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR)

- Basic computer skills
Physical Requirements:
- Remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time
- Occasionally move about the office and facility campus to access various departments and patient care areas.
- Constantly position self to maintain equipment and provide patient care
- Constantly operates a computer, office and Lab machinery
- Ability to communicate information accurately so others will understand.
- Ability to observe details at close range.
- Frequently move boxes, equipment, etc. weighing up to 20 pounds across office for various needs.
