Job Description
Job Summary: Provides patient care in the office setting. Provides care that meets the psychosocial, physical and general aspects of care; meets the communication needs of patient and family; provides care that reflects initiative and responsibility indicative of professional expectations, under the supervision of a RN/LPN and/or physician. Maintains regulatory requirements, nursing and office policies, procedures and standards. Communicates with physicians and team members about patient’s clinical condition, including results of diagnostic studies and symptomatology. Consistently performs venipunctures and capillary blood collections on patients of all ages. Follows laboratory policies and procedures.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provides direct patient care under the supervision of a Practitioner, evaluates outcomes, consults with other health team members as required.
- Ability to assist medical staff with routine examinations and patient treatments. This includes pediatric, adolescent and geriatric patients and the general patient population.
- Notifies appropriate licensed personnel when patient complains of pain.
- Performs patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for patient’s age.
- Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide age appropriate care to the patients served.
- Medical and surgical asepsis is carried out during treatments and special procedures.
- Ability to position and prep patients for office procedures.
- Communicates appropriately and clearly to co-workers, Practitioners and Office Manager.
- Demonstrates the ability to assist Practitioners with procedures and perform services requiring technical and manual skills under the direction of a Practitioner.
- Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and family in patient education.
- Interacts professionally with patient and family and involves patient and family in patient education.
- Maintains infection control standards for exam/procedure rooms; cleans, disinfects changes linen, etc.
- Maintains office instruments; knowledgeable of sterilization techniques and biological indicators for sterilization.
- Maintains established office policies and procedures, objectives, performance improvement program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
- Maintains injections logs and checks medications for expiration dates.
- Fill out lab requisitions and provides appropriate and accurate information for billing.
- Answers telephone calls in a professional manner, directs calls appropriately; refers patient problems to practitioner; schedules patient appointments.
- Ensures an adequate stock of supplies.
- Assists in cost containment through appropriate ordering and conserving of supplies and equipment.
- Maintains a good working relationship with all staff members of the office.
- Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly. Performs preventative maintenance.
- Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
- Response to the patient is appropriate in emergency or physically distressful situations.
- Understand the importance of patient identification and proper collection techniques for optimal samples.
- Has thorough knowledge of specimen requirements.
- Performs quality control procedures and instrument checks.
- Maintains accurate laboratory records on procedures performed for statistics and billing.
- Meets current documentation standards and policies.
- Interacts professionally with the Laboratory Director, physicians, medical staff, laboratory staff and patients.
- Follows standard precautions at all times.
- Maintains current knowledge of hospital policy, CMS, state and other regulatory requirements.
- Completes duties in a time efficient manner, knows how to prioritize STAT orders, ASAP orders, scheduled orders and outpatients.
- Seeks guidance and direction as necessary.
- Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Performs other duties as assigned within the medical assistant’s scope of practice.
Professional Requirements:
- Adheres to dress code standards; appearance is neat and clean.
- Completes annual educational requirement.
- Maintains regulatory requirements, including all state, federal and CMS regulations.
- Maintains and ensures patient confidentiality at all times.
- Reports to work on time and as scheduled; completes work within designated time.
- Wears identification while on duty, uses computerized time system correctly.
- Attends annual review and in-services as scheduled.
- Completes in-services and returns in a timely fashion.
- Attends staff meetings and reads staff meeting minutes.
- Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner in the community.
- Participates in the department’s quality improvement CQI activities, attends committee and management meetings, as appropriate.
- Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
- Communicates the mission, vision, core values, ethics and goals of the hospital.
- Works at maintaining a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with practitioners, departments and staff.
- Ensures compliance with policies and procedures regarding department operations, fire safety and infection control.
Regulatory Requirements:
- Current CPR certification.
