Summary of Position:

Manager, Operations Accounting & Special Projects manages all responsibilities related to assets and operational accruals. Responsibilities include leading the Operational Accounting team in a manner that provides exemplary customer service to internal and external customers. This position is responsible for executing Ad Hoc requests throughout the organization. The primary areas of focus include Capex, Lease Operating Expense (“LOE”), Inventory, Work in Progress (“WIP”), Oil & Gas Assets, and Furniture Fixtures and Equipment (“FF&E”). The role will need to have excellent Excel skills and the ability to work with and communicate effectively with many different departments and personnel. This position will be responsible for completing a variety of complex assignments involving advanced knowledge of accounting principles and accounting practices in the industry.


Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide training, supervision, and direction to the Operational Accounting team
  • Supervise professional level employees
  • Lead in establishing formalized department policies and procedures and ensure they are understood and followed by direct reports and stakeholders
  • Assist in the governance of Authorization for Expenditures (“AFEs”) including monitoring for compliance with the Civi’s policy and proper usage of AFE types
  • Develop effective relationships with other departments internally and externally
  • Plan and establish goals and objectives for the team, with direct impact on the immediate- or short-term operational results of the department
  • Monitor financial transactions related to oil and gas capital and expenses, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with accounting policies and procedures
  • Review of monthly accounting entries, including Capex, LOE, WIP, Inventory, and FF&E
  • Perform and/or review monthly account reconciliations for accounts assigned and ensure proper presentation of account balance
  • Collaborate with other departments such as Operations, Engineering, Land, and Marketing to ensure financial data is accurately reflected in the company's systems
  • Lead integration efforts as they relate to future company acquisitions, purchases, and mergers
  • Ensure department processes are SOX compliant and maintain appropriate internal controls/procedures
  • Responsible for department management including staffing, training, performance management, and career development
  • Ad Hoc requests throughout company as it relates to accounting information
  • Help complete monthly analyses by comparing actual vs. budget/forecasted balances and research accounting transactions to confirm accuracy, validity, and understanding of financial activity
  • Assist management in resolving complex accounting issues or challenges that arise in upstream operations
  • Identify, execute, and document process improvements related to main areas of focus to ensure efficient and effective procedures

  • Utilizes critical thinking skills to analyze complex problems, assess various perspectives, and develop innovative solutions that drive informed decision-making and enhance overall organizational efficiency
  • Must be a self-starter - able to identify work that needs to be done and do it without being instructed to do so

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, or finance or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. MBA a plus.
  • Minimum of 12 years’ experience in oil and gas accounting required; upstream preferred
  • Proficient in Microsoft products (Outlook, Excel, Word) required with advanced skills in Excel in particular
  • Oil & Gas related ERP system experience required
  • Experience with Power BI and/or SQL preferred
  • CPA license preferred

Travel & Additional Requirements:

  • Work is performed at a CIVI location Tues-Thurs with an option to work remotely on Mondays and Fridays.
  • Schedule: traditional 40-hour workweek or alternative schedule of 9 hour works days M-Thurs and 4-hour workdays Friday.
  • Infrequent travel may be required to other Civitas offices and field locations.
