EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE ROWAN MUSEUM JOB DESCRIPTION Rowan Museum Inc. is a small museum in Salisbury, NC, whose mission is to collect, preserve, research, exhibit, and educate the public about the history of Rowan County and Piedmont North Carolina. The ideal candidate will be an exuberant self-starter who will lead the Museum forward; have knowledge of NC history; demonstrate experience in supervising staff; develop and implement educational programs and special events; and be knowledgeable of digitizing the extensive collection. Successful fundraising experience is a plus. Preference will be given to applicants with a Bachelor Degree in Museum Studies, Public History, Public Administration or equivalent and willing to pursue a Master’s Degree. Salary will be commensurate with education and experience. Responsibilities of the Executive Director will include: Carry out the mission and vision statement of the Rowan Museum and seek to develop the museum into one that provides ways to ensure that the mission of the Rowan Museum is expanded and maintained now and into the future. Adhere to the agreement of the signed and accepted contract, perform expected duties in the contract and reasonable duties requested by the Rowan Museum Board of Directors. Work with the Board of Directors and sub-committees to seek ways to enhance the mission of the Museum. Keep open communications with the Board of Directors and sub-committees while educating them on the duties of a non-profit museum board. Any concerns are to be brought to the attention of the President of the Board and the Executive Board. Develop, implement, and carry out policies, procedures, and programs offered by the Rowan Museum and encourage the development of new programming ideas. Keep and secure all minutes from meetings, relative emails, and news/media reports related to the Museum and keep them as part of the yearly record of Museum activities. This yearly record is to be secured for future reference. Create a written, organized listing of resources for the Museum for any emergency to include, but not limited to, electricians, plumbers, heating and air conditioning services, and repair experts. This list should include emergency donors, docents, historical groups (dancers, re-enactors, other resources). This resource guide should be at each site for emergency situations. All staff members should be aware of these listings. Follow all legal funding operations of the Rowan Museum and work closely with the treasurer to ensure that budgeted funding remains stable. Seek funding opportunities, such as grants and donations, and oversee all fundraising activities for the Rowan Museum. Maintain contact with past and potential future sponsors to ensure their support for the Museum. Build membership through various forms, such as membership drives; newsletters; sponsorship opportunities; docents, volunteer; and other opportunities that may arise. Develop partnerships with other organizations and individuals that have many of the same goals as the Rowan Museum. Hire, supervise, and evaluate all staff. Maintain confidential information concerning staff, volunteers, and others with whom they are directly involved at the Museum. Follow all ethical national, state, local, and museum laws, rules, and policies. Work to improve, expand, and maintain the social media platforms of the Museum. Seek further educational opportunities to improve leadership skills. Stay current on museum policies in order to improve the operations of the Museum. Provide monthly updates to the Board on all activity of the Rowan Museum. Work with the Board to establish and carry out short- and long-range goals while assisting the Board to maintain the financial sustainability of the Rowan Museum. Ensure the maintenance and security of all properties and Collections. Partner with the curator to work toward digitizing the Collection. The Executive Director’s performance will be evaluated annually by the Museum President. This evaluation will become part of the Museum records.
