What will the Driver Manager do?

The driver manager position optimizes the utilization of company resources by managing dedicated Auto Haulers throughout our freight network in service to our customers. This position is primarily responsible for building and maintaining high quality relationships with drivers, managing driver performance, and providing the necessary support to ensure optimal efficiency.

What is the Driver Manager responsible for?

  1. Provide daily supervision of assigned drivers and monitors to ensure proper and consistent performance of duties.
  2. Understand and apply company guidelines, policies and/or procedures in diverse situations.
  3. Continually assess the service level and provide recommendations to regional management and network logistics regarding opportunities to improve operational performance.
  4. Monitor and manage Auto Hauler performance indicators and factors impacting operational effectiveness.
  5. Monitor and manage productivity, service, quality, training, maintenance, and safety targets for each Auto Hauler
  6. Promote and monitor Auto Hauler safety and take proactive steps to create a positive safety culture.
  7. Embrace, promote and lead continuous improvement efforts, including selection and implementation of dispatch processes, systems, and personnel.
  8. Monitor daily truck revenue goals – explain variances from company standard.
  9. Monitor and manage driver attendance to ensure drivers and trucks are being utilized for full days and full weeks.
  10. Monitor loads dispatched to drivers and work with Network Logistics to maximize driver earnings and company revenue.
  11. Establish and maintain a positive relationship with all drivers. Create a driver experience that is number one in the industry.
  12. Partner with logistics to develop efficiencies regarding hauling maximum load factor, reducing empty miles, conserving fuel, reducing idle time, etc. by utilizing available technology

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This job has supervisory responsibilities for Auto Haulers. This includes, but is not limited to:

  1. Responsibility for managing performance and relevant performance feedback, providing motivation and encouragement
  2. Interpreting policy and ensuring policy compliance to include execution of progressive discipline for policy violations.
  3. Scheduling and managing time and attendance
  4. Managing Auto Hauler complaints and monitoring satisfaction levels
  5. Monitoring Auto Hauler production and handling inquiries relative to pay and incentive programs
  6. May be required to perform other supervisory duties.

What knowledge, skills and abilities are required for the Driver Manager role?

  1. Associate or Technical Degree in Logistics, Transportation, Business or related field preferred
  2. Experience in logistics and dispatch, preferably within auto hauling distribution.
  3. Demonstrated experience leading, directing, communicating change and developing a team strongly desired.
  4. Knowledge of transportation enterprise software applications.
  5. Working knowledge of tractor and trailer maintenance.
  6. Solid written and oral skills with a strong ability to work with others
  7. Aptitude to gain further competency in transportation analysis tools
  8. Knowledge of DOT compliance, laws, rules, regulations and safety.
  9. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  10. Knowledge of TMW and PeopleNet a plus.
  11. Ability to maintain a high level of accuracy and completion in preparing and entering information.
  12. Highly organized, proficient in prioritization, attention to detail and possessing a high level of accuracy.
  13. Ability to provide positive reinforcement and possess a positive attitude.
  14. Must possess ability to provide timely follow up to drivers and management.
  15. Comfortable working in a high-stress environment and ability to stay calm under pressure.
  16. Strong interpersonal skills to develop and maintain positive relationships with dispatch team and auto haulers.
  17. Strong communication skills (oral, written and listening) with motivational ability.
  18. Work occasionally requires a high level of mental effort and strain when performing essential duties. Must be able to perform the essential duties of the position with time constraints, interruptions and stressed dispatchers and drivers.
  19. Work may require more than 40 hours per week.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit/stand for most of his/her job duties. There is the need to frequently walk and sit. There will be a great deal of standing, stooping, kneeling, bending, lifting and reaching for some of his/her job duties.

Visual requirements include reading off a computer screen as well as printed materials. A high degree of dexterity is required due to frequent use of a telephone console.

Verbal and auditory requirements include the ability to communicate clearly over the telephone as well as in person.


There is a moderate level of grasping, lifting, pushing and/or pulling of objects of more than 25 lbs.
