The role of an Expanded Functions Dental Assistant at our clinic is instrumental in facilitating a smoother, more efficient workflow and enhancing patient care. As a professional stepping into this position, you will have the unique opportunity to broaden your skills and knowledge in dental care practices, directly impacting patient satisfaction and treatment outcomes.
Duties and Responsibilities- Assist the dentist during a variety of treatment procedures.
- Set up and breakdown of the operatory post treatment.
- Take dental radiographs (x-rays) as prescribed by the dentist.
- Manage infection control - prepare and sterilize instruments and equipment.
- Provide patients with instructions for oral care following surgery or other dental treatment procedures.
- Teach patients appropriate oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health (e.g., tooth brushing, flossing and nutritional counseling).
- Take impressions of patients' teeth for study casts (models of teeth used by dentists to evaluate patient treatment needs).
- Apply preventive materials to the teeth (e.g., sealants and fluorides).
- Assist in the placement, carving, and finishing of amalgam and composite restorations.
- Provide postoperative instructions prescribed by the dentist.
- Maintain a professional and conducive work environment for patients and fellow team members.
- Ensure all confidentiality and data protection laws are strictly adhered to.
- Perform office management tasks that often require the use of a personal computer.
- Communicate with patients and suppliers (e.g., scheduling appointments, answering the telephone, billing and ordering supplies).
- Help to provide direct patient care in all dental specialties, including orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, and oral surgery.
- Certificate in dental assisting with a focus on expanded functions.
- Current CPR certification.
- Detail-oriented with strong patient service skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral formats.
- Experience in performing expanded functions specific to dental practice requirements.
- Understanding of health and safety regulations within a dental office.
- Proactive attitude towards problem-solving and patient care management.
- Must be able to thrive in a high-pressure environment.
- Availability to work flex hours, including evenings and weekends as needed.
- Professionalism in both appearance and demeanor.
