Job Summary:

The Triage RN or LPN is responsible for completing accurate medical history documentation electronically while delivering excellent communication skills over the phone. Educate patients or designated Family Member/POA/Guardian concerning pre-operative requirements for procedure scheduled. Effectively apply anesthesia screening protocols to evaluate patient, reporting deviation of diagnostic testing or concerns to Medical Director or his/her designee. Performs a variety of clerical and record keeping tasks related to the patient's scheduled procedure and pre-operative testing. Provide statistical data to the management Team as directed. Assist with appropriate changes to the surgical schedule.

Position consists of scheduling outpatient procedures and calling patients pre-operatively to obtain complete health history. RN must be self-motivated, assertive and have attention to detail. Candidate will have ICU and/or medical inpatient unit experience. Candidate will contact specialists, obtain office notes and diagnostic test results. Once all information is obtained the LPN/RN will have anesthesia team review chart. Knowledge of medical risk stratification helpful.

The Triage RN or LPN will coordinates total patient care by collaborating with other staff members and departments. Functions as a patient care advocate utilizing the Patient's Bill of Rights. Demonstrates professional growth and development by accepting responsibility and accountability for one's practice.


Key Areas of Responsibility:

  • Via pre-operative phone call or Center's preoperative triage visit, complete patient's medical history.
  • Ensure pre-operative requirements for scheduled procedure have been communicated accurately to patient or designated representative.
  • Report any questionable acquired medical or psychological information to Medical Director or his/her designee.
  • Accurately revises requested general and local procedures, using specific policies and guidelines.
  • Schedules or arranges for scheduling of diagnostics related to the scheduled procedure.
  • Cooperatively with Pre-op staff accurately prepares charts for patients having surgery the next day. Assists with assuring that all orders have been completed and all diagnostic results, H & P, and consent are available on the patient's chart.
  • Makes accurate and timely adjustments to the surgery schedule, including add-ons, cancellations, and other changes. Communicates these changes appropriately, in verbal, written, and on-line forms of communication, per policy.
  • Assist with accurately generating monthly statistics and other reports as requested, and distributes to Executive Director, Medical Director, and the Board of Managers.
  • Answers telephone using proper telephone courtesy, taking and delivering messages in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Performs a variety of clerical duties, as assigned.
  • Performs activities with efficiency and speed.
  • Assists visitors, staff and physicians utilizing good guest relations.
  • Acts in a "marketing" capacity toward all scheduling offices.
  • Adheres to OSHA guidelines for Universal Precautions for exposure to blood and body fluids. Follows all AORN Recommended Guidelines and Center policies.
  • Participates in the orientation of new employees, students and other approved program participants.
  • Participates in Center's Quality Improvement Program activities including identification of aspects of care, collection and analysis of data, formulation of recommendations, implementation of an improvement plan, and evaluation of the process.
  • Attends Center staff and unit meetings and educational opportunities.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Current Indiana LPN or RN license.
  • Current BLS certification or certification obtained by completion of orientation.
  • Demonstrates interpersonal communication skills required to facilitate effective interaction with a variety of health care professionals.
  • Possesses strong clerical abilities, including proficiency in typing (minimum of 50 words/minute) and familiarity with Microsoft Office. Demonstrates an aptitude for quickly learning new computer software applications.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology preferred or required to complete a course in medical terminology. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and percentages.
  • Ability to concentrate in a busy environment.
  • Ability to give attention to details under stressful, demanding conditions.

Job Type: Full-Time, 40 hours

Schedule: 1st Shift, Monday - Friday, No Weekends!
