Seasonal Assistant GroundskeeperThe Lynchburg Hillcats are the Single-A affiliate of the Cleveland Guardians and play in the Carolina League. The Assistant Groundskeeper will work hand-in-hand with the Head Groundskeeper to maintain a top playing field. We are looking for someone with both prior experience and the desire to gain even more experience.
Job Description
Assist in planning, supervising, and executing the maintenance of Bank of the James Stadium.The Assistant Groundskeeper is a seasonal position from March 1st to October 1st.The Assistant Groundskeeper is an important part of maintaining a state of the art playing surface. They will be involved in all on field maintenance including mowing, field marking, fertilization, irrigation, mound and plate repair, edging, skin maintenance, tarping, batting practice setup, aerification, and set up for extra events that will be held at Bank of the James Stadium.The Assistant Groundskeeper will also be overseeing other grounds crew members and assist in directing front office staff during tarp pulls.
Requirements
•Candidates have prior Turf experience or Turf coursework along with a strong work ethic.
•A desire to learn and have working knowledge of the maintenance of sports fields.
•Knowledge of seeding, sodding and maintenance practices for sports field turf grass
•Understanding of the characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers and soil conditioners, materials, and irrigation systems, including pumps and automatic controls.
•Possess leadership qualities to lead a small grounds crew staff.
•Strong verbal and written communication skills are required.
•A degree in turf or a related field is preferred but quality of prior experience will be considered heavily if the candidate has no formal education.
•Candidate must be able to work long hours, 66 home game schedule plus outside events on the field during the season including weekends and holidays.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time seasonal position. Days and hours will vary to include evening and weekend work according to business needs. This position will be required to work home games. Position ends October 1st.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The key physical requirements of this position include the ability to walk and stand for an extended period of time, work in extreme weather conditions such as rain, cold weather, and hot weather, lift up to 50 pounds, and the use of groundskeeping equipment including but not limited to mowers, edgers, sprayers, UTVs, etc..
