Job Description

Under general supervision, Maintenance Worker performs a variety of skilled, semi-skilled, or unskilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, and servicing of City streets, storm drains, parks, trees, landscaping, park facilities, and equipment; operates a variety of light to heavy power-driven equipment and trucks; and performs related duties as required.
Essential Job Duties
Sets forms, pours, and finishes concrete to repair curbs, gutters, driveways, and sidewalks; removes asphalt, fills cutouts, overlays, or fills holes; sprays emulsion. Uses hand tools, jackhammers, rollers, and other equipment to prepare and finish surfaces; performs crack seal street repairs; clears City right-of-way by cutting brush, raking, and hoeing; sprays chemicals under the direction of the Leadworker.
Maintains athletic fields, and assists in setting up, breaking down, and performing general maintenance for City sponsored events.
Using power and hand tools, edges and weeds lawns, flower beds, and other landscaped areas; cuts and plants sod; spreads seed and fertilizer; plants or removes, prunes or trims trees, flowers, and shrubs; operates, maintains, and repairs in-ground sprinkler systems; cleans walkways, parking areas and other areas of leaves and other debris; removes trash; operates power mowers, chain saws, stump grinder, hydraulic lopper, pole pruner, blowers, sweepers, edger's, hedge trimmers, clippers, sprayers, and other equipment or vehicles; makes minor repairs such as sharpening blades; performs routine maintenance and equipment safety inspection.
Performs maintenance and custodial duties in park buildings, cleaning, stocking, and sanitizing restrooms and recreational facilities.
Removes, replaces, and repairs street signs; performs traffic striping and painting; performs sandblasting or painting for graffiti removal; paints traffic legends and curbs; repairs or replaces fences; installs, removes, and repairs guard rails and barricades.
Answers emergency calls from the public and other agencies, taking appropriate action such as placing barricades, removing fallen trees and limbs, replacing street signs and emergency patching of streets, and repairing storm drain systems.
Operates pickup and dump trucks, tractors, trenchers, loaders, boom sprayers, backhoes, bucket trucks, and other maintenance equipment; assists with storm drain cleaning and
maintenance; performs routine maintenance on equipment; and may be assigned to operate a street sweeper, sewer jetter, or related equipment.
Assists with traffic control; sets out cones, signs, or barricades; and may direct traffic at the work site.
This class reports to the Public Works Operations Assistant Manager or the Facilities/Maintenance Assistant Manager.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of:
Common tools, materials, and safety devices or equipment used in parks, streets, and public works maintenance; basic operation of gasoline-driven motors; lawn maintenance; gardening methods; care and treatment of trees, flowers, plants, and shrubs; building maintenance methods and materials; and simple arithmetic.
Skills/Abilities to:
Communicate clearly and simply; comprehend written and oral directions; operate trucks and motorized equipment; mechanical ability and understanding; use rough working diagrams; work effectively in a small group or alone without continuous supervision.
Education and Experience
Graduation from High School or G.E.D. required. Previous experience in the above duties is desirable.
License
Possession of a valid Class C California driver's license and proof of insurability are required. Must obtain a Class B California driver permit within six months of hire, and obtain the Class B license within the one-year probationary period.
Certifications
Possession of applicable Certificates in all related fields are highly desired and/or required. Certifications will be considered in the selection process during the recruitment of a Maintenance Worker. A QAC (Qualified Applicator Certificate) with categories B, C, and N from the Department of Pesticide Regulation is desirable. Also, Playground Safety Inspector and Collection Wastewater Certificates are highly desired.
Physical Demands
In the performance of daily activities, this position requires the ability to sit, stand, and walk for up to two hours at a time. Must be able to reach, grasp, twist, turn, bend, climb, stoop, kneel, and squat. Requires the ability to operate a motor vehicle to visit various City sites; vision to read printed materials and see while working; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. Must be able to work at heights above 40 feet. Must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull heavy objects up to 50 pounds. The position must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions including heat, cold, wind, rain, and other conditions.

Nonshift employees receive 80 hours of vacation after one year of service; 120 hours after five years of service; 160 hours after ten years of service; and 200 hours after 20 years of service. Shift employees receive 145.21 hours of vacation after one year of service; 217.79 hours after five years of service; and 290.40 hours after ten years of service. Sick leave accumulates at the rate of eight hours per month. The City may credit an employee who is coming from another governmental agency with one half of his/her accumulated sick leave up to a maximum of 240 hours. Presently, 104 hours of paid holidays are provided each year for nonshift employees and 157.29 hours of paid holidays are provided each year for shift employees.
