RESEARCH ENGINEER - SR. RESEARCH ENGINEER - Digital Electronics / Spaceflight Ha

Southwest Research Institute, Durham, New Hampshire

Who We Are: The SwRI Department of Earth, Oceans, and Space (located on the University of New Hampshire campus in the seacoast town of Durham, NH) offers exciting aerospace engineering opportunities. We offer a unique collaborative environment involving scientists and engineers at both SwRI and UNH. We design and fabricate spaceflight hardware, including new instrumentation and custom- designed avionics. Active programs include science missions in space weather, heliophysics, astrophysics, and Earth science, as well as commercial spaceflight programs. Objectives of this Role: Support the design, analysis, documentation, verification, and test of digital electronics hardware (including FPGA development) for space applications, including command and control, data storage, signal processing, and communications. Participate in the full life cycle design (from concept to hardware) for flight digital electronics in high reliability systems for space applications. Work effectively with a diverse team of scientists and engineers to develop a detailed list of requirements and to insure that the designs meet those requirements, participating in design reviews as needed. Work to ensure that the digital electronics interfaces seamlessly with other components of the spacecraft payload as needed. This requires an understand of the spacecraft systems and payload instruments, and the requirements of the digital electronics. Daily and Monthly Responsibilities: Responsible for the design and implementation of digital electronics and FPGA code for a variety of space-borne applications, including both government and commercial programs. Interface with scientists and other customers to translate their requirements into operational designs, and validate those designs through simulation and test activities. Participate in design reviews as needed, including both internal (peer) reviews and external (customer) reviews. Travel may be required. Support integration and testing of space flight instrumentation. Travel may be required. Provide necessary documentation to satisfy customer requirements. For many programs, this will include the documentation necessary to satisfy QA requirements. Requirements: Requires a Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Software Engineering. 2-8 years: Experienced in circuit design, with an emphasis on digital electronics. 2-8 years: Experienced in FPGA development. 2-8 years: Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, Teams, and PowerPoint. Must have the ability to learn SwRI internal software, procedures, and business rules. Experience working with projects using ISO 9001 quality systems is desirable. A valid/clear driver's license is required.
