The System Administrator provides full-time systems administration services in the school's IT department. The incumbent builds and deploys systems autonomously or with minimal direction from senior staff members. System administration includes tasks such as operating systems and application version upgrades, application of patches, performance tuning, troubleshooting hardware and software, hardware maintenance and growth projections, backup, recovery, security and engineering and administration of enterprise and departmental storage services. This is an on-site, in-person position. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES Ensure maximum availability and high performance of hardware and supporting software within the IT department. Develop, schedule, coordinate and implement goals and plans for all assigned systems. Builds and deploys systems autonomously or with minimal direction from senior staff members. Provides stable, robust and secure systems and applications. Secures servers using best practice methodologies. Ensures modern and secure enterprise systems and applications that meet the growing needs of the organization. Perform system administration tasks on any of the servers, including Microsoft Windows, Linux, VMWare and applications such as Viewpoint and Sage, and various storage technologies, the department is responsible for either as a primary responsibility or in a backup capacity. Administer maintenance tasks such as operating system and application version upgrades, application of patches to ensure stability of systems, performance tuning, troubleshooting hardware and software, hardware maintenance, system backups and system security monitoring and enforcement. Research new systems technologies for implementation into current environments as part of upgrades or enhancement planning. Work with other IT staff to proactively research and evaluate new technology and incorporate applicable new technology into existing topologies to improve server performance and availability, ease system administration and maximize system security. Leads and participates in projects. Identifying tasks and creating timetables are required. Plan and meet project goals and while ensuring quality deliverables. Collaborate with colleagues and end-users to complete projects in a timely fashion. Plan server and client migration between software releases while planning for growth, perform disaster recovery planning and implementation, and ensure that the servers are tuned for peak performance. Maintain accurate, up to date documentation of all systems under your responsibility. Plan, manage and supervise systems, requiring high ethical standards. Provide excellent service, by listening to customers and understanding their needs; help customers solve problems; demonstrate an eagerness to help; exhibit a professional disposition; be approachable, respectful, and team-oriented; take ownership of inquiries and assignments; provide updates for customers; and be familiar with the basic operations of the university in order to understand customer needs better. Functions effectively in a Matrix Management environment. Completes any duties and special assignments as requested. EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, AND CERTIFICATIONS Minimum of two (2) years of experience in IT, Systems Administration, and/or related field required, preferably in higher education or healthcare industries Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, and/or related field required or Associate's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology plus two (2) years of systems administration experience in lieu of Bachelor's Degree VMware Certified Professional (VCP) Certification preferred Veeam Certified Engineer (VMCE) Certification preferred PMI Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) Certification preferred Kubernetes Certification preferred KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES QUALIFICATIONS Proficient knowledge of advanced clustering technologies and enterprise storage methodologies Proficient knowledge of IP addressing, firewalls, routing and switching Proficient knowledge of server virtualization and management Proficient knowledge of local account security and system hardening Proficient knowledge of server failover and fault tolerance Proficient knowledge of multi-tier server configuration. Proactively seeks solutions for recurring issues, acting independently when appropriate. Takes responsibility for identifying cause and solution. Follows industry standards and best practices in problem identification and solutions Proficient knowledge of containerization and container orchestration Proficient knowledge of cloud architectures Proficient knowledge and skills of the following: operating system deployment, hardware configuration, backup and recovery and monitoring Proficient knowledge and experience implementing new system technologies Must be able to take responsibility for assigned tasks. Seeks clarification, and provides updates and insights as needed Must be able to effectively convey ideas and information in ways that help influence positive outcomes.
