POSITION SUMMARY:
Substation Electrician I will report directly to the Substation General Foreman.
The position is an entry-level position in the construction, maintenance, and repair of substation systems and equipment. This position will learn all aspects of substation work while completing on the job training.
This position is designated as a safety-sensitive position.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Performs all work in a safe manner. Complies with all applicable safety rules, regulations, and procedures. Performs all work that they are qualified and trained to do in a manner to protect themselves, their fellow employees, and the public from injury.
- Must be able to follow Company safety rules and all other Company policies.
- Understands when to wear personnel protective equipment (PPE).
- Understands minimum approach distance.
- Frequently works with energized high voltage systems requiring skill and care to protect the lives of themselves and others.
- Ability to perform all assigned tasks in a safe and effective manner.
- Work safely while aiding the crew in the completion of new construction, maintenance, or repair work of energized and de-energized work.
- Reads and interprets drawings, wiring diagrams, specifications, manufacturer's instructions and work orders pertaining to substation, transmission, and distribution circuits construction and maintenance. Makes field revisions and notes on drawings as needed.
- Capable of performing excavation and shoring.
- Understands the basic concepts of equipment setup and grounding.
- Lays out and installs vault, manhole, duct runs, conduit, conduit fittings, wiring devices, control wire, electrical cable, cable terminations, fiber optics, and associated accessories.
- Installs, operates and maintains substation structures and equipment such as transformers, switchgear, batteries, chargers, network protectors, mobile substations, reactors, capacitors, circuit breakers, and apparatus vital to the continuity of electrical service. May perform like work on customer and generating facilities. Performs work on energized circuits using protective equipment and hot line tools.
- Installs, tests, and maintains various types of substation-related metering and relaying systems, which include electro-mechanical types and solid-state electronic types where applicable.
- Installs and assists in the installation, testing, and maintenance of distribution supervisory control equipment (RTUs), telemetering systems, protective relaying, and load control equipment which utilizes solid state devices, electromechanical relays, power line carrier equipment, voice frequency carrier equipment, and microwave equipment where applicable.
- Performs switching operations in substations and underground networks as applicable, as directed by supervisory personnel, or systems control center.
- Ability to understand and communicate information and work in a team environment
- Maintains company vehicles, equipment, and tools in good working order.
- Performs necessary maintenance and or housekeeping on or around construction sites, substations, and vaults.
- Operates vehicles and equipment necessary to perform the job. Inspects vehicles and equipment for proper operating conditions.
- Understands the proper use and maintenance of hand tools.
- Capable of assisting with the installation and hook up of a single-phase transformer.
- Capable of checking voltage on transformers.
- Capable of receiving and following directions.
- Must have an acceptable motor vehicle record.
- Diploma/certificate from High School, GED, or Line school required.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must have a valid driver's license.
- Must have Class A CDL or ability to obtain one.
- Preferred experience in electrical substations.

- This position involves Heavy Work: exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers to handle, feel, lift and grab; reach with hands and arms; push and pull; climb and balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl; talk, see clearly and hear.
- Work is performed outside and includes exposure to extreme cold, heat inclement weather & noise.
- Willing to work in various locations across the state/country and for extended periods, when required. Travel up to 95%.
- Must have the endurance necessary to perform these duties throughout a standard eight (8) or ten (10) hour day according to the schedule.
- Be on time and ready to work at the start of each standard shift.
- Must always wear personnel protective equipment. (i.e., Hard hats, safety glasses, safety harnesses, ear protection, fire retardant clothing, as required) and respirators when required.
