Statement of DutiesConstructs, alters and repairs structures, buildings, furniture equipment and fixtures made of wood or similar materials. Work is performed in accordance with building codes and standard trade practices. Fabricates, alters, and repairs structural wood work, floors, stairways, and fixtures. Performs such activities as measuring, sawing, squaring, drilling, sanding, fitting and fastening. Performs repairs on such equipment as desks, chairs, tables, shelves, and cabinets. Hangs doors and repairs related hardware. Repairs windows, frames, and screens. Plows and sands sidewalks, parking lots and highways; performs unskilled labor duties of which the following are typical examples: digging holes, trenches, and other excavations; shoveling materials and leveling areas; delivering supplies; assisting other personnel in Building Division tasks; loading and unloading materials; removing snow/ice using manual or small powered equipment; spreading sand on icy areas; using small hand tools, i.e. shovels, picks, axes, saws, heavy wrenches and small power tools. Performs all other duties that may be assigned including but not limited to assisting other Buildings Shop staff as a helper. Performs other duties as required.Recommended Minimum Qualifications5 plus years' experience.Must have ability to receive and interpret written and oral instructions from supervisor.Must be in good health, dependable and able to do hard physical work.Must have and demonstrate ability to use tools of trade in workmanlike manner.Must possess valid Massachusetts Class D driver's license.Must possess valid Massachusetts Department of Public Safety Builder's License, Department of Labor & Industries Contractor License, or Board of Building Regulations & Standards Construction Supervisors License.Work EnvironmentThis position primarily works indoors, but may be subject to outdoor environmental conditions, including wet, hot and cold, and exposure to fumes, dust and air contaminants. Noise or physical surroundings may be distracting, but conditions are generally not unpleasant. Work may require some agility and physical strength, such as moving in or about construction sites or over rough terrain, or standing or walking most of the work period.Physical and Mental RequirementsThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Noise level may be high when operating power equipment. Employee may be exposed to outside weather conditions especially in emergency repair situations. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and greater than 50 pounds using appropriate equipment.Motor SkillsWhile performing the duties, employees are regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data, information and documents; analyze and solve problems; use math and mathematical reasoning; observe and interpret situations; learn and apply new information or new skills; work under deadlines with constant interruptions; and interact with City staff. The position also requires balancing, pushing, pulling, grasping and feeling to complete tasks.Visual SkillsSpecific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
