Journeyman Carver

This position carves numerous projects such as canoes, masks, paddles, story planks and other woodcrafts. Participate in various Snoqualmie Indian Tribe culture events, trainings, and ceremonies. Provide safe canoes and paddles for Canoe Journey and other events.

Essential Duties:

  • Carve wood for many projects such as canoes, masks, paddles, and story planks. Accurately determine and cut appropriate dimensions and shapes of carved objects.
  • Maintain canoes in good condition. Sand wood, fix cracks, ensure canoes are dry and oiled regularly, especially while in storage in the off-season.
  • Coordinate with department staff to research and incorporate Snoqualmie culture into various Tribal events/activities, such as drum-making, weaving, resource gathering, song, and dance, canoe journey, conferences, etc.
  • Generate all necessary material requests, check requests, and support material to ensure project completion.
  • Mill logs for projects. Sharpen saws, set up mill, measure out thickness of planks, and move planks to dry.
  • Skipper/pull canoes. Load canoes and always ensure the safety of people on board.
  • Properly sharpen, maintain, and store tools and equipment. Properly maintain, organize, and keep clean shop and storage areas.
  • Source and purchase materials and supplies as needed to accomplish carving projects.
  • Share information with tribal members, staff, and local communities on Snoqualmie history, culture, and woodcraft traditions. Work closely with these groups and individuals to help build and maintain positive relationships.
  • Follow all safety regulations and ensure others follow them when on canoes or interacting with woodcraft projects. Report potentially unsafe conditions and recommendation appropriate corrective action.
Additional Duties:
  • The Tribe values its commitment to community service and the well-being of its members. In recognition of this, each employee may be expected to perform duties from time to time which may not be related to their regular responsibilities.

Requirements
  • Extensive knowledge of Snoqualmie history, culture, and traditions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations.
  • Excellent eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity. Be creative and have a sense of design
  • Knowledge of different types of wood and how they will work for certain projects. Knowledge of handheld and electrical tools.
Education & Experience:

Education Required:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
Experience:
  • Two or more years' demonstrated knowledge and experience of various Northwest Native tribal carving traditions and techniques, including canoes and different techniques used in coastal, inland, and northern regions.
Certifications/Licenses:
  • Must have and maintain a valid unrestricted Washington State driver's license required. Qualified driving record required.
Other Requirements:
  • Must be able to pass a thorough pre-employment background and character investigation.
  • Must agree to be subject to the Tribe's Controlled Substance and Alcohol Testing Policy to include pre-employment screening.
Work Environment:

Position works indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions. High exposure to dirt, dust, shavings, water, fumes, noise, and vibrations. Travel requirement of up to 15% of a given month using a GSA vehicle.

The Snoqualmie Indian Tribe follows the Tribal Hiring Preference as outlined in tribal policies, including the Tribal Employment Rights Ordinance (TERO). TERO sets forth certain hiring preferences for qualified individuals who are enrolled in a federally recognized Indian tribe, as well as, in some cases, preference for certain family members of those individuals.

Additional Information:
  • Hourly, compensation will be determined based on experience and starts at $27.21 per hour.
  • This position is a regular full-time position and employment is at will.
