Tooling Engineer

We are seeking an experienced Tooling Expert to lead the evaluation, selection, and management of tooling requirements for new RFQs (Request for Quotations) and sourcing activities. As a critical member of the team, the Tooling Expert will focus on tooling design reviews, mold simulations, optimizing tooling solutions, ensuring they meet the highest standards for cycle time, quality, and cost. This role will be instrumental in ensuring the efficient and effective production of plastic, stamping, and die-cast components for Tesla supplier. This role is vital to our Supplier CapEx strategy, as tooling represents one of our top spend categories.

Responsibilities

  • Tooling Design Review: Conduct thorough reviews of tooling designs for plastic, stamping, and die-cast components, ensuring compliance with engineering standards, manufacturing requirements, and customer specifications
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to design and develop tools optimized for cost efficiency and quality standards
  • Mold Flow Analysis: Utilize mold flow analysis software to simulate the flow of molten plastic into molds, identifying potential issues and optimizing tooling designs for efficient production
  • Work closely with tooling suppliers during the RFQ process to develop and quote tooling solutions that are optimized for cycle time, quality, and cost
  • Problem-Solving: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify and resolve tooling-related issues, including part quality problems, process inefficiencies, and cost-saving opportunities
  • Continuous Improvement: Drive initiatives to improve tooling processes, reduce cycle times, and enhance overall manufacturing efficiency
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of tooling designs, analysis results, and process improvements
  • Implement and uphold industry standards in tooling processes, ensuring all tools meet Tesla's rigorous quality requirements. Stay updated on the latest advancements in tooling technology and techniques to continuously improve our tooling capabilities
Requirements
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field pr equivalent expereince
  • Experience with advanced tooling design and analysis techniques
  • Knowledge of materials science and metallurgy
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in tooling engineering, tooling design, evaluation with a focus on plastic, stamping, and die-casting applications
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and tooling design principles
  • Proficient in simulation software - Mold Flow, Auto forming, Metal Casting simulations
  • Strong understanding of mold flow analysis and metal casting simulation software
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with suppliers and cross-functional teams
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

      $104,000 - $204,000/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits

      Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
