ENVIRONMENT: Outpatient, clinical care setting


GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Collects specimens from patients and prepares these specimens for in-house or send-out testing. May require some CLIA waived testing, use of computers and associated software.


DUTIES PERFORMED:

· Frequently collects blood specimens via venipuncture and capillary collection.

· Frequently collects other specimen types and/or gives patient instructions for other specimen types per specimen collection requirements. (urines, swabs, stool, sputum, etc.)

· Frequently collects reference lab specimens according to reference laboratory specimen collection requirements.

· Frequently performs CLIA waived testing using glucometer while following proper quality control and testing procedures.

· Responsible for inventory of phlebotomy and reference laboratory supplies.

· Keeps phlebotomy draw rooms stocked with supplies.

· Constantly cleans phlebotomy draw rooms and lobby as required and performs required preventative maintenance.

· Frequently receives written and electronic orders from physicians and/or clinic staff.

· Constantly uses computer hardware, laboratory information software, and associated devices.

· Keeps current in the field through literature, workshops, seminars, or online continuing education.

· Helps train new employees and students as necessary.

· Performs other duties as assigned.


Requirements:

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to work independently following established procedures and policies.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work and manage multiple priorities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail; errors with mislabeling samples could cause error in diagnosis and treatment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with providers, management, staff and contacts outside the organization.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:


1. High School Diploma or GED required.

2. Office skills including telephone etiquette.

3. At least two years work experience as Phlebotomist.

4. Six weeks on-the-job training.

5. At least two years in a customer service environment
