Your role at A Safe Place


As a Shelter Family Advocate, you'll play a crucial role in our mission by offering immediate support and advocacy within our shelter. Your focus will be on empowering survivors, ensuring their safety, and facilitating their transition to independence while maintaining a compassionate and secure environment.


What you’ll be doing:

  • Develop safety plans and manage cases for comprehensive client support.
  • Provide crisis counseling, advocacy, and connect clients with community resources.
  • Offer legal referrals and assist with DHS benefits.
  • Educate on domestic violence laws.
  • Manage shelter operations, engage in community building, and handle donations.
  • Conduct client evaluations and maintain accurate records.
  • Participate in staff development activities.
  • Provide post-shelter support, mentor volunteers, and build local agency relationships.
  • Complete and pass IM+CAN training certification.
  • Participate in all required meetings, training, and team activities, performing additional duties as assigned.

Compensation:

  • Estimated Base Rate: $20 to $25 per hour, translating to an annual potential of $41,600 to $53,000 for full-time employees, paid bi-weekly.
  • Determination: Individual compensation will be determined by grant funding, skills, expertise, experience, and other relevant factors.
  • Employment Authorization: Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S. without visa sponsorship or transfer.

Requirements:

What you’ll bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, counseling, or related field.
  • Bilingual Spanish is required.
  • Experience in crisis intervention, case management, and advocacy with a focus on client empowerment through counseling and active listening.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal skills, and conflict resolution abilities, handling crises with sensitivity and confidentiality.
  • Cultural competence, ethical practice, and sensitivity to diverse backgrounds.
  • Commitment to engaging clients, supporting their independence, and advocating for A Safe Place's mission against violence.

What you'll experience:

  • Primary Shift: Friday/Saturday, 11:00 PM to 7:00 AM.
  • Additional Support: 3.5 hours per week assisting Shelter staff as needed, totaling 19.5 hours weekly.
  • Adaptability: You'll need to be flexible to address the dynamic needs of our clients.
  • Work Settings: From a professional office to secure and confidential emergency shelters.
  • Physical Requirements: Capable of lifting 20 pounds, navigating stairs, and moving throughout our facilities.
  • Service Commitment: Must meet 70% direct service target; 60% for supervisory roles.
  • Team Engagement: Commitment to attend 70% of staff meetings.
  • Community Involvement: While participation in company and community events is optional, some roles may require your presence at outreach activities.
  • Travel: May be required for community outreach, training, and other duties.
  • Transportation: Must have reliable transportation, a valid driver's license, and active auto insurance.
