Job Description:
The Boston Globe seeks an experienced copy editor to work full-time on its Boston-based sports desk as it edits and prepares copy for publication on all platforms, including our website, printed newspaper, social media, and newsletters.
Responsibilities Work shifts, depending on season, at both the Globe's Boston office and remotely (hybrid schedule) Work nights, weekends, and holidays Edit stories for content, accuracy, clarity, and grammar Write compelling, conversational headlines Compile roundups, notebooks, and other story forms from wire, staff, and other sources Enhance online stories with SEO and meta headlines, inline photos, videos, related links, social media posts, and graphics. Work with our audience engagement team to strategize and implement best practices for social media, newsletter, and other forms of outreach to amplify our content's reach. Communicate frequently with the nightly slot editor and collaborate with copy desk colleagues. Learn and perform new tasks and use new technologies that may be required as the Globe expands its digital presence and emphasis Qualifications
Someone with a strong understanding of Boston's professional, college, and high school sports scene - the current landscape, the history, the people involved, and the major storylines. Someone with 3-5 years experience working on the sports copy desk of a daily newspaper editing stories, writing headlines and photo captions, and posting to the internet. A creative and accurate headline writer who can differentiate for SEO, meta, and other headline uses. A stickler for details with an eye for spelling errors, inconsistencies, and other mistakes Cool under pressure and able to handle multiple assignments Someone who always makes deadline Someone who improves stories while respecting the writer's voice and approach Well-versed in the business practices, composition, and logistics of major professional sports organizations, particularly MLB, NFL, NHL, and NBA. Someone savvy with social media, content marketing, and audience engagement workflow and practices. A willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment
