ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE
As America's oldest professional ballet company and one of the three largest ballet companies in the United States, San Francisco Ballet has enjoyed a long and rich tradition of artistic "firsts" since it was founded in 1933. SF Ballet performed the first American productions of Swan Lake and Nutcracker, as well as the first production of Coppelia, choreographed by an American choreographer. Guided in its early years by American dance pioneers and brothers Lew, Willam, and Harold Christensen, San Francisco Ballet currently presents more than 100 performances a year locally, nationally, and abroad. Under the direction of Helgi Tomasson, the Company has achieved an international reputation as one of the preeminent ballet companies in the world.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
STUDIO REHEARSALS:
- Assist choreographers and producers in staging new work, record and document changes in choreography as required. Rehearse and maintain standards of existing repertoire, maximizing dancers' technical and artistic capability, and in the absence of the original choreographer or producer, be fully conversant with the choreographer's artistic intentions including preparation and learning of these works using videos and/or notation scores provided by the Company.
- Ensure the Company Code of Practice is implemented and respected in rehearsals by choreographers, repetiteurs, guest teachers, and dancers.
- Liaise with the Logistics Manager in planning the weekly rehearsal schedule.
- Support the maintenance of dancers' technique by providing general training (class) to an outstanding level, and deliver individual and remedial coaching as necessary to all ranks of artists, soloists, and principals as appropriate.
- Commit to maintaining effective team-working with the studio, exemplifying genuine collaboration.
PRODUCTION REHEARSALS AND PERFORMANCES:
- In conjunction with the Artistic Director, Executive Rehearsal Director, and ballet staff, monitor stage rehearsals to ensure that all choreography is accurately reproduced and monitor performances to ensure that artistic and professional excellence is maintained.
- Provide regular performance feedback to company dancers as appropriate, depending on venue and setting.
- Contribute to the casting of all performances - both general and daily, in addition to adhering to all amendments to daily casting at each performance venue.
MANAGEMENT:
- Assist in recruiting dancers as required and observe and facilitate company auditions, evaluating resumes and DVDs of audition applicants as required.
- Mentor an allocated group of dancers in the Company (as specified by the Artistic Director) and document these meetings by creating a digital record (Company mentoring guidelines will be provided).
- Provide input for dancers' evaluation/appraisal meetings and attend meetings for the allocated group of dancers mentored.
- Mentor dancers assisting in rehearsals, ensuring they understand and respect the Company Code of Practice.
- Monitor individual dancers' professional standards in rehearsal and performance, providing feedback and guidance as appropriate, depending on venue and setting.
- Assist with the effective management of the Company so that a high level of professional excellence and morale is maintained.
- Attend all artistic team meetings and full Company meetings.
- Assist in developing and maintaining effective team-working within and between departments and locations.
- Audition and recruit new dancers for the Company and provide feedback on auditions to the rest of the Artistic Team.
- Check emails regularly and send/receive/file emails for digital documentation.
- Keep updated on information related to the Company's schedule, artistic vision, current dancers, upcoming productions, rehearsals, and performances.
- Deliver other such duties as may be required by the manager or directorate.
GENERAL:
- Sustain a strong collaborative artistic partnership with the Artistic Director, Associate Artistic Director, and Executive Rehearsal Director.
- Display the ability to lead, teach, and inspire company dancers.
- Commit to attend any professional development/management training which supports their role.
- Show a broad knowledge of the international dance scene, a strong work ethic, and excellent communication skills.
- Be an ambassador and representative for the company and its artistic objectives and always act in the best interest of the company.
- Respect confidentiality of all parties and communication.
- Participate in the provision of a safe working environment, always adhering to the Company's Health & Safety Policy.
- Maintain a strong team ethic within the department and Company.
- Attend an Annual Appraisal with the Artistic Director.
AUTHORITY:
- Assess and effectively communicate the rehearsal requirements to dancers and lead rehearsals.
- Amend casting as needed (consulting the Artistic Director/Executive Rehearsal Director where appropriate).
