The Position
Summary:
As part of the Site Operations organization, the Principal Automation Engineer is a member of the Facility Systems & Plant Engineering (FSPE) team that provides technical support to ensure the safe, efficient and reliable operation of automation systems owned and supported by Site Services at Genentech’s South San Francisco and Dixon sites. The Principal Automation Engineer acts as a Technical System Owner and subject matter expert for various Building Automation platforms. This role actively engages in the design, installation, troubleshooting and maintenance of critical automation and technology infrastructure for a portfolio of 50+ buildings and 6 million square feet of space. This role provides strategic feedback in the development of automation infrastructure, leads communications with key customers and cross-functional partners, and directly supports capital projects, business initiatives, process improvements and regulatory inspections.
Responsibilities:
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Act as Technical System Owner (TSO)
- Own and maintain wide range of automation platforms, control systems and system applications (GMP & non-GMP automation assets)
- Lead the design, development, and implementation of Building Automation Systems (BAS) using Siemens Desigo, ALC and Aveeva PI technologies
- Technical expertise in the integration and optimization of BAS components
- Conduct system performance analysis and implement corrective actions
- Customer Support: Work closely with Site Operations customers and provide essential system support in a 24x7 environment. (SSF & Dixon)
- Identify and resolve hardware and software application issues; run change control.
- Lead and maintain server infrastructure including system patching, upgrade, backups, operating procedures, and system manuals.
- Technical leader who influences cross-functional teams
- Focus area: Longer-term objectives, key strategic initiatives, next gen automation platforms.
- Establish work priorities and timelines under limited supervision.
- Developing and leading vendor-partner relationships, support contracts, vendor resources.
- Serve as a mentor to develop peers and energetic engineers.
Who You Are:
- You have over 12 years of experience designing and supporting BAS specific automation systems in manufacturing or critical operations environments, with recent experience in a pharmaceutical or manufacturing environment.
- You excel at working within a team, learning new technologies, and collaborating with internal customers, team members, and external vendors.
- Your outstanding customer service and interpersonal skills set you apart, and you're a pro at leading multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
- Experience with industrial networks and communication protocols (e.g., TCP/IP, Windows Networking, OPC, BACnet, MODBUS).
- Strong hands-on technical experience in the following areas is required:
- BAS: Siemens Desigo CC, BBMD configuration and ALC WebCTRL.
- Networks: BACnet, TCP/IP, OPC & Modbus.
- Data Systems: OSI PI Data Archive and Collectives, Asset Framework (including plugins), OSI PI Connectors and SQL Database.
- Experience in the following areas is a plus:
- Windows based Programming (C/C# and .NET Framework).
- IIS Web Application Configuration.
- Data Management: Yokogawa data acquisition systems.
- Windows server management, active directory & group policies.
- An understanding of cGMP regulations and Good Engineering Practices (GEP) is second nature to you, and you are continuously seeking improvement methodologies such as LEAN/Six Sigma.
- Your Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, along with system-specific certifications, rounds off your impressive profile.
The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $134,800 - $250,400. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
