Job Description
The Director of Development and Strategic Partnerships at the W. E. Skelton 4-H Educational Conference Center at Smith Mountain Lake will work to enhance the Center's overall comprehensive Advancement functions. This position is responsible for fundraising activities and forging new relationships to promote the visibility and expansion of the Center's external position in the region. Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Advancement & Campaign Director and the President and Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of the Skelton 4-H Center, the director will also work with the staff of the Center with responsibility for the planning and implementation of overall fundraising efforts in support of current operations, endowment, and other capital purposes from all private sources in close cooperation with the university's central advancement office.
This position must:
• Have strong motivation and the ability to work as a team member within a complex organization requiring collaboration, teamwork, and communication.
• Be capable of motivating volunteers, professional staff and donors.
• Demonstrate the ability to lead a program including goal setting, evaluation, and planning.
• Demonstrate the ability to communicate with key faculty and administrative professionals as well as stakeholders of the W.E. Skelton 4-H Educational Conference Center.
• Be able to travel regionally and nationally for the purposes of conducting field research, cultivation, and solicitation, which may include overnights and weekends.
• Be able and willing to travel utilizing standard, commercial, and/or personal modes of transportation.
• Be able to work nights and weekends, and participation in college or university programs when possible.
Required Qualifications
• Master's degree or Bachelor's degree with experience equating to an advanced degree.
• Successful track record in fundraising
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
• Prior experience working in a team environment.
• Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.
• Capable of leading a program including goal-setting, evaluation, and planning.
Preferred Qualifications
• Knowledge of Virginia Tech and related experience in education, 4-H, and extension.
• Prior fundraising experience in a university setting.
