Description and Justification
The Director of Assessment will provide leadership, oversight, monitoring and execution of the assessment and evaluation processes for the medical students across the four curricular years. The overarching objective of the position is to ensure that all assessments utilized for student development (formative) or student assessment (summative, for grade) meet or exceed the highest standards specified by the college, the National Board of Medical Examiners, the American Educational Research Association, and the American Psychological Association. The director will develop policies and procedures to guide the evaluation and assessment experiences of the medical students throughout the curriculum, ensure the reliability and validity of these assessments, and implement periodic appraisal of their efficacy. This position is vital to the School of Medicine's accreditation process through the Liaison Committee on Medical Education.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Coordinate the Office of Medical Education’s student assessment program.
- Work closely with the Office of Medical Education, the Preclerkship Education Committee (PEC), the Clerkship Education Committee (CEC), and the clinical skills course instructors to develop a progressive, thoughtful, and longitudinal student assessment program.
- Lead the development of a new mission, vision, strategic plan, and strategic objectives for medical student assessment.
- Develop or revise evaluation forms used to assess students throughout the MD program.
- Work with faculty to ensure student assessments within the medical education program are well-designed, following best practices, and appropriate for the learning outcomes.
- Collaborate with course directors, educational technology team, and administrative staff to prepare, administer, and improve formative and summative student assessments.
- Provide psychometric analysis and lead standard setting sessions to improve and maintain assessment quality.
- Summarize test performance for preclerkship and clerkship courses, and prepare and present reports to course directors and educational committees.
- Provide faculty training related to student assessment practices.
- Maintain databases with assessment data, and provide reports as requested.
- Serve on the Preclerkship Education Committee.
- Serve on the Clerkship Education Committee.
- Serve on the Evaluation Review and Remediation Committee.
- Contribute to the scholarly work of the Office of Medical Education (OME).
- Assist with accreditation-related quality improvement activities.
- Monitor LCME accreditation standards related to student assessment and author responses to accreditation reports and survey items.
- Meet the “Responsibilities of all OME Faculty”.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- MD or PhD, or EdD with focus in educational or psychological measurement preferred.
- Knowledge and expertise in advanced statistical and computer applications in educational assessment.
- Knowledge and expertise in the areas of applied psychometric theory and current practices in assessment of medical students.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Strong writing skills.
Desirable Qualifications
- Three (3) years of experience in medical student education in the clinical workplace and/or classroom settings.
- Experience in designing multiple choice, short answer/essay, laboratory, and/or standardized patient examinations.
- Experience with performance-based assessment, qualitative assessment, and standard setting.
- Experience in conducting evaluations of clinical performance of medical students and/or resident physicians.
- Experience in training faculty in student assessment practices.
- A record of publication in medical student assessment.
- Knowledge of LCME requirements related to student assessment.
