A law firm is seeking an Assistant General Counsel - Discovery and Records to manage legal affairs related to client file transfers and discovery in internal firm matters. This position is critical for handling responses to subpoenas, discovery requests, and ensuring proper legal review of firm records. The Assistant General Counsel will work closely with internal and external stakeholders, manage preservation holds, and provide guidance on discovery compliance processes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee discovery processes for internal firm matters, advising the Office of the General Counsel, partners, associates, and business professionals.
  • Prepare and manage responses to discovery requests and subpoenas, and assist with internal investigations.
  • Meet with requesting parties to negotiate the scope of discovery responses.
  • Implement and manage preservation holds in collaboration with the Office of the General Counsel and the Information Governance department.
  • Work with the Information Governance department to develop and manage data preservation, collection, and review protocols.
  • Manage the scoping and review of information from firm files for use in discovery, subpoenas, and file transfers.
  • Coordinate with the litigation/eDiscovery department on project management and vendor costs.
  • Update and refine firm policies and procedures related to client file transfers and discovery functions.
  • Provide guidance and oversight to file review attorneys to ensure compliance with legal standards.
  • Coordinate with outside counsel on the discovery process, including assisting with discovery motion practice and drafting briefs.
  • Support the Office of the General Counsel in aligning internal stakeholders with legal processes and procedures.
  • Stay updated on legal developments related to discovery, risk management, and regulations affecting the firm.
  • Offer strategic legal guidance on litigation and risk management, identifying and addressing potential risks.
  • Assist in developing and implementing risk management strategies and projects.
  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality, ethics, and professionalism.

Job Requirements:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Active member in good standing of the jurisdiction's Bar.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience managing discovery, including eDiscovery projects, for complex litigation matters.
  • Strong knowledge of discovery concepts, procedural rules, and litigation practices.
  • Experience with relational document review databases such as Relativity.
  • Understanding of data privacy regulations and principles.
  • Preferred experience with legal ethics and privilege issues.
  • Desired experience in law firm risk management and project management.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, iManage, and other firm applications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly present information.
  • Strong legal research, analysis, and writing abilities.
