Primary Duties and Responsibilities
As a key member of the senior leadership team at Hoag Hospital Foundation, the Senior Vice President of Strategic Philanthropy will play a critical role in shaping and executing the Foundation’s fundraising strategy. This role involves spearheading efforts to secure major and deferred gifts, boosting corporate giving, and driving transformative contributions, with a particular focus on principal and transformative gifts that have direct impact on various campaigns launched by Hoag (current examples: Hoag Irvine Campus capital campaign and the upcoming $1B campaign). The SVP will design and implement strategies to identify, cultivate, and solicit high-value prospects and their advisors, including those requiring complex tax and investment planning, with the goal of securing principal and transformational gifts for Hoag priorities. The SVP, Strategic Philanthropy will mentor and coach program directors and development directors and the SVP, Strategic Philanthropy will oversee principal gifts ($5.0M+).
Key responsibilities include developing a comprehensive strategic plan for major, principal and deferred gift fundraising that aligns with the Foundation’s mission and goals; providing expert advice on complex tax and investment strategies to enhance donor contributions; designing and executing innovative approaches to engage high-net-worth individuals, foundations, and corporations; strengthening relationships with corporate partners to increase giving and sponsorship; and overseeing prospect research and management to ensure a robust pipeline of potential donors. The SVP will work closely with the Foundation’s President and Cabinet members as well as collaborating with all development officers to ensure alignment of deferred, corporate, and transformative giving with the Foundation’s strategic priorities. The SVP, Strategic Philanthropy will also be responsible for 1) Developing and implementing annual performance plans and standards, and 2) will work to develop an implement institution-wide reporting on development officer and Institute/unit based fundraising activities and performance. 3) Reviewing all gift agreements in alignment with fundraising best practices and procedures.

Job Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies
  • Campaign experience – Led or been on the leadership team for successful major campaigns. Academic and healthcare experience preferred
  • Gift Planning experience – knowledgable and fluent with gift planning methods and tools. Certification required.
  • Transformative gift experience – experienced closing multiple transformative gifts ($10M+ level).

Education and Experience
Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 15 years in philanthropic development, with substantial expertise in major and planned giving, transformative giving, capital campaigns, and corporate giving
  • Expertise in planned giving techniques, tax laws, and investment strategies
  • Proven success in managing and securing transformative gifts and leading large-scale capital campaigns.
  • Strong leadership abilities and experience in team management
