A General Counsel, also known as Chief Legal Officer, is the main lawyer that provides legal advice and services to an organization. They oversee and manage all the legal affairs of an organization, which includes setting internal governance policies and managing the impact of external factors. A General Counsel is responsible for business transactions, negotiating and writing contracts, analyzing legal issues related to proposed products, and guiding management on legal matters and issues. They ensure the organization's legality of commercial transactions and operations.
Essential skills for a General Counsel include strong analytical and problem-solving skills, excellent negotiation skills, and a deep understanding of the business strategy. They should have the ability to communicate complex matters in clear and understandable terms. A law degree and admission to practice law in their jurisdiction are required. Further, they should have substantial legal experience, ideally in a corporate environment. A person may have roles such as an Associate Lawyer, Senior Legal Counsel, or Partner at a law firm before becoming a General Counsel.
Required Qualifications: Juris Doctor with 7+ years of practice. Ability to work at GE HealthCare's Chicago headquarters with a minimum in-office requirement of 3 days per week.
Job Requirements:
- Juris Doctor Degree and a license to practice law in the state where the legal department is located.
- 5 years experience as a practicing attorney after receiving a law degree.
- 8 years' experience as an attorney with demonstrated understanding/experience of the health sector.
Demonstrable experience and skill with a broad range of commercial transactions and related legal issues, at approximately the level of sophistication of a senior associate or junior law firm partner.
The General Counsel also serves as Assistant Secretary to the Board of Trustees.
Qualified candidates will have experience supporting Accident & Health insurance business to join their General Counsel's office.
