Head of Communications Fremont, CA

Pacificfusion, Fremont, CA, United States

About Pacific Fusion

Pacific Fusion was founded in 2023 with the mission to power the world with abundant, affordable, clean energy.

We are rapidly designing and building a pulsed magnetic fusion system to achieve net facility gain (more fusion energy output than stored energy input). In parallel, we are developing the key components required to build affordable fusion systems.

Our plans are ambitious. We have raised over $900M so far from incredible investors, resourcing us to deliver on these plans. We are bringing together the best scientists, engineers, and operators from the fusion community, hard tech industry, and other sectors. We are united by a shared sense of urgency to provide clean power for the world, particularly managing climate change while meeting growing global energy demand.

About the Role

Job Overview:

As Head of Communications (and our first comms hire) you’ll lead the charge in crafting and telling our company story.

You’ll own our external-facing brand—website and social channels, media relations and PR, conferences and speaking engagements, decks and one pagers, and fundraising and investor relations materials.

And you’ll collaborate with and rally our team to represent the brand in everything they do—drafting messaging docs, training teams, and reviewing materials.

This role isn’t right for most people, but it’s perfect for the right person. We move fast, talk fast, have thick skin, demand a deep level of technical understanding, and care about both the vision and the details. If this last paragraph makes you more excited than scared, read on.

Responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain consistent, compelling messaging that the team can use and rally around.
  • Manage the website, making sure it always reflects our narrative, milestones, and news.
  • Own and execute our social and content strategy—what we should be talking about, how frequently, and on what channels.
  • Lead comms, PR, and media relations. You’ll pitch stories, editorials, and speaking opportunities, write blog posts, and react to inbound requests.
  • Manage the schedule, cadence and approach for major company announcements.

Qualifications:

  • You’re equal parts strategic and scrappy.
  • You’re curious. You ask a lot of questions.
  • You love science and engineering. You understand technical ideas at a conceptual level.
  • You turn complex concepts into compelling stories, and can tell them at multiple altitudes.
  • You turn disparate threads into streamlined narratives.
  • You work well with founders, leadership teams, engineers and scientists.

Preferred but not required:

  • You have worked at an early stage or scaling tech startup.
  • You have worked directly with founders.
  • You have worked at inherently complex and technical companies (e.g., deep tech, climate tech, regulated industries).
  • You were the first communications hire at a scaling startup.

Benefits:

  • Industry-competitive salary.
  • Equity plan.
  • 6% employer 401k matching.
  • Generous paid time off (including sick leave, vacation, paid family leave).
  • Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance.

The posted salary range reflects the anticipated base pay for this role in the San Francisco Bay Area. Actual compensation may vary based on several factors, including candidate experience, skills, and location. The range does not include equity, benefits, or other types of compensation. If your salary expectations are outside the listed range, we still welcome your application.
