Position Summary:
The Registered Nurse (RN) specializing in Durable Medical Equipment (DME) plays a vital role in assessing, coordinating, and managing the provision of medical equipment to patients in need. The RN will collaborate with healthcare providers, patients, caregivers, and DME suppliers to ensure appropriate and timely delivery, usage, and maintenance of medical equipment, ultimately supporting patients’ health and quality of life.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Patient Assessment & Care Planning:
- Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients’ medical conditions, physical abilities, and equipment needs to determine the most suitable DME. Develop and implement individualized care plans that include recommendations for appropriate equipment, training on use, and safety considerations.
- Provide clinical guidance on DME selection, usage, and care to patients and caregivers.
- Care Coordination:
- Coordinate with physicians, case managers, and DME suppliers to facilitate the prescription, procurement, and delivery of equipment.
- Ensure proper setup, usage instructions, and patient/caregiver training for equipment such as oxygen therapy devices, mobility aids, CPAP machines, and other DME.
- Monitor patient outcomes and equipment effectiveness, making adjustments to care plans and equipment as necessary.
- Patient Education & Support:
- Educate patients and their families on the operation, maintenance, and safety of DME.
- Address any concerns or questions related to the equipment, providing troubleshooting support as needed.
- Promote patient adherence to care plans, including equipment usage and follow-up appointments.
- Documentation & Compliance:
- Document patient assessments, care plans, equipment prescriptions, and follow-up interactions in electronic health records (EHR) in accordance with HIPAA and organizational policies.
- Ensure compliance with Medicare, Medicaid, and insurance requirements for DME prescriptions, documentation, and billing.
- Keep up-to-date with changes in DME regulations, guidelines, and best practices.
- Quality Assurance & Program Improvement:
- Participate in quality assurance activities, including audits, patient satisfaction surveys, and outcome analysis.
- Identify and report any issues related to equipment quality, supplier performance, or patient safety.
- Collaborate with the healthcare team to improve DME services and patient care processes.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
One of the following combinations of education and employment experience must be met in order to be considered for the position:
Education And Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing required. Master’s degree in nursing or Public Health preferred
- Must be licensed as a RN by the Massachusetts State Board of Registration. BLS required.
- Home health experience and a clear understanding of the various home health line service lines available to patients is required.
- The ideal candidate would have home health discharge planning and utilization review experience (preferably with a health insurance company).
