Description/Distinguishing Features
Performs manual labor of more than ordinary difficulty which often involves the use of acquired skills; does related work as required.
This is routine work involving the use of some skills acquired by experience or on-the-job instruction. This work requires physical strength and endurance. A Laborer II normally works under the supervision of a supervisor who issues oral work orders and inspects work frequently. Employees in this class may be assisted by one or more laborers.
Examples of Duties
Picks up and hauls refuse from buildings. Performs a variety of building maintenance, carpentry, painting, masonry, and inspection tasks. Acts as helper to mechanics, carpenters, painters, and other trades people where special skills are not usually required. Digs and braces sewer and water lines and ditches. Raises and lowers manholes and performs the rough masonry work involved. Builds form for sidewalks and works as a cement finisher. Makes water taps and cuts water on and off. Sets up and operates sewer rodding markings. Prepares soil, plants, cultivates, and fertilizes flowers, grass, and shrubs. Frequently operates dump trucks with snowplows, front end loaders, backhoes, boom trucks, and other equipment in a part-time capacity. Makes, repairs, and paints metal street signs and paints street markings. Digs graves with tractor-digger as trainee or on a part-time basis. Sets vaults and back-fills. Paves and patches streets with asphalt mix. Drills wells. Operates tractor mowers and other lawn trimming equipment. Replaces light bulbs and tubes. Services equipment with gas, oil, and grease. Sets up traffic barricades and delineators. Builds sweeper brooms. Cuts pavement, runs wires, places posts, and repairs parts of controllers and signal devices. Essential Qualifications
Some knowledge of a variety of semi-skilled maintenance and manual tasks; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to read and write. Willingness and ability to perform heavy manual work for an extended period under varying climatic conditions. Ability to perform duties such as those listed in the Examples of Duties section. Acceptable Training and Experience
Some experience in performing semi-skilled maintenance or construction tasks and preferably completion of a standard grade school course; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities. Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license issued by the State of Michigan and a special commercial vehicle driver's license for positions in Public Services Department.
