Job Description: The Boston Conservatory at Berklee (BCB) seeks a temporary Assistant Technical Director (ATD) to assist with various productions in the Spring 2025 semester. Reporting to the Technical Director, Mainstage, this position acts as a master carpenter and scene shop supervisor for assigned productions. The ATD will work closely with scenic designers, properties designers, directors, and others to ensure all scenic and properties elements are constructed in a safe and timely manner, in accordance with the overall artistic vision, timeline, and budget of a given production.

The ATD leads crews for load-ins and load-outs for assigned productions at on-campus and off-campus venues, and works closely with other members of the Performance Services Department for installations and general maintenance of performance, rehearsal and other spaces. The ATD supervises student employees and may supervise overhire crew during work calls, in consultation with the Technical Directors.

This position will primarily support the Theater Division’s production of Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812, taking place at the Roberts Theater in April 2025. The ATD will work directly with staff at the Calderwood Pavilion and an outside scene shop to support this production. A tentative production schedule is below.

Production meetings beginning in December 2024 Scenic preliminary design due December 16, 2024 Scenic final design due February 3, 2025 Rehearsals February 2 - March 28, 2025 Load-in March 24 - 27, 2025 Tech rehearsals March 29 - April 8, 2025 (schedule to be confirmed) Dress rehearsals April 8, 2025 Performances April 9 - 13, 2025 Strike/load-out April 13 - 14, 2025 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Build scenery and props for productions, with overhire assistance as needed Maintain and document the functionality and safety of the theaters, equipment and tools, workshop, storage facilities, and other department facilities Manage and disseminate notes at technical rehearsals and represent Technical Direction team as assigned Serve as manager-on-duty for events and performances as assigned Train and supervise student employees (approximately 2-3 students, 6-8 hours/week) Collaborate with the Technical Direction team in technical planning and drafting Other duties as assigned MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

1-3 years professional experience in technical theater Experience working as a technical director or assistant technical director for Theater, Opera, and/or Dance Excellent written and oral communication skills KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

Valid driver’s license and clean driving record required Working knowledge of standard theatrical practices and procedures General knowledge of theater, musical theater, and opera production needs Advanced knowledge of stage operations, standards, and practices Proficiency in stagecraft, knots, theatrical construction methods Proficiency in light metalwork and fabrication Proficiency in computer-aided drafting (AutoCAD and/or Vectorworks) Familiarity with appropriate OSHA and EPA standards, safe rigging practices and applications Experience in stage automation and show control is preferred, but not required Some knowledge of theatrical lighting systems, electric and electronic design Some knowledge of audio-visual equipment, including projections and QLab, is preferred, but not required Some knowledge of sound systems and theatrical audio reinforcement is preferred, but not required SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Strong troubleshooting and problem solving skills Punctuality, dependability, and ability to work independently Strong leadership and teamwork skills Valid driver’s license with clean driving record SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Oversee student employees Lead overhire labor crews Ensure safe working environment for all reports WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Indoor environments, some with low light: stages, backstage areas, dressing rooms, workshop, control booth, office spaces, off-campus performance and storage spaces Seated and standing positions. Stairs and ladders SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS, PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, ETC:
