The Justice & Diversity Center of The Bar Association of San Francisco (JDC) has a strong commitment to employee work-life balance and provides a stimulating work environment. JDC currently has a need for a Pro Bono Manager and Supervising Attorney to join the Pro Bono Legal Services department.

The Pro Bono Manager and Supervising Attorney, CORP is responsible for designing and implementing the overall strategy for recruitment and retention of volunteer attorneys for Pro Bono Legal Services (PBLS), as well as supervising the operations of the Community Organization Representation Project (CORP). This position will collaborate with PBLS staff to plan volunteer events, oversee volunteer outreach for PBLS, and supervise PBLS volunteers at events such as Project Homeless Connect's Community Day of Service.

Administration
  • Collaborate with the PBLS Director/Managing Attorney to develop and implement JDC policy and new projects
  • Supervise CORP staff (Legal Programs Coordinator) and Volunteer and Clinics Coordinator positions. Collaborate with the PBLS
Director/Managing Attorney and CORP staff to oversee administration and personnel matters for CORP including:
  • Client inquiries and application
  • Evaluating matters for purposes of issue spotting and placement
  • Placement of matters with volunteer attorneys
  • Providing legal referral information to clients, depending on the nature of issue and the client
Recruitment
  • Communicate with firms regarding pro bono opportunities, presentations, and information requests
  • Design and implement an outreach campaign and recruitment strategy directed at volunteer attorneys, social services volunteers, interpreters, paralegals, students and others
  • Work with law firms, law schools, corporate legal departments and government law offices to design volunteer programs and signature projects to meet their needs, developing new products that suit emerging volunteer needs, as well as appropriately positioning existing JDC opportunities to enhance marketability
  • Coordinate outreach and recruitment efforts to potential volunteers when initiated by other JDC staff
Training and Retention
  • Oversee coordination of training for volunteer attorneys and organizations
  • Supervise the Volunteer Coordinator to produce the annual JDC Volunteer Appreciation Party
  • Work with JDC and BASF staff on preparing print and electronic communications regarding trainings and volunteer recognition
  • Coordinate nominations and awards of JDC volunteers, staff, and supporters
  • Oversee the PBLS Volunteer Coordinator plan
  • Collaborate with other JDC staff to ensure that volunteers are satisfied with their work for JDC
Public Relations/Outreach
  • Work with BASF Communications Department to produce recruitment materials
  • Work with Publications and Development departments on public relations material
  • Coordinate production of volunteer, project/program, and client spotlights for circulation among BASF
    publications and social media platforms and on JDC and BASF webpages.
  • Attend legal and community conferences and presentations to represent JDC (may require non-local travel)
  • Engage in public speaking at firms and public events
  • Prepare reports and presentations regarding pro bono services
Education:

J.D. is required

Experience:
  • Minimum of two years of legal experience
  • Experience in or interest in serving a diverse, low-income community
  • Experience with pro bono-based projects is preferred
  • Experience working in or with law firms is preferred
Prerequisite Skills and Experiences:
  • Must be a member of the California State Bar in good standing
  • Ability to effectively manage several projects simultaneously, and handle a high volume of activity (meeting deadlines)
  • Ability to develop effective strategic plans
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to use good judgment in making effective decisions quickly
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills with attention to detail
  • Ability to be extroverted in social settings, and to network effectively
  • Ability to work well in a team environment
  • Knowledge in any of the following areas of law: poverty, corporate, nonprofit, consumer, bankruptcy, real estate, employment, or tax and knowledge of community economic development issues is preferred
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
