Cuyuna Regional Medical Center Operating Room Crosby, MN Nursing Full Time, 10-hour Day Shift FTE: 1.0 FTE (80 hours per pay period) Weekend Requirements: Weekend call Posted 08/16/2024 Req 13389 POSITION SUMMARY The Peri-Operative Registered Nurse is responsible for providing nursing leadership and patient care and advocacy within the inter-operative and endoscopic procedures performed within Surgical Services. This position shall ensure safe, efficient and cost effective delivery of care consistent with established AORN standards, departmental policy and nursing practice. The peri-operative nurse will perform both direct and indirect nursing care to patients not limited to the functions: OR pre-operative nursing assessments and implementing OR plans of care; circulating RN leadership and coordination of technologist; instrumentation and supply coordination; scrubbing, room turnovers and when applicable first assist duties. In addition, the Peri-Operative RN is responsible for billing and inventory depletion constantly promoting efficient cost effective use of equipment and supplies. Compliance with National Patient Safety Goals, departmental and regulatory compliance is an important aspect of performing safe, high quality patient care, while promoting overall efficiency and success of Surgical Services. Delegated additional duties and project work to ensure the successful completion of departmental goals and objective shall be expected. Finally, this position reports to the Director of Surgical Services and shall work closely with Surgeons and Anesthesia, the Medical Director of Peri-Operative Services and Patient Care Coordinators. RN Scrub duties apply ONLY to those that have completed the RN Scrub training and competencies. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: Prior operating room experience preferred. License/Certificates: Current Minnesota RN license. American Heart Association BLS certification required within 30 days of hire. American Heart Association ACLS certification required within 4 months of hire. Special Skills and Aptitudes: Knowledge of nursing principles, practices and techniques gained through a variety of nursing experiences. Completion of specific education programs as recommended by the individual unit assigned. Exemplifies self-direction with good organizational, analytical and interpersonal skills. Knowledge and compliance of state and federal accrediting agencies. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES RN: Exercises concern for the patient's welfare, maintains knowledge of the patient's condition, administers medication, and performs treatment while practicing and maintaining high ethical standards. Responsible for the direct and indirect care of residents/patients assigned to her/him under the guidance of the Director of Surgical Services, maintains accurate and complete records of nursing assessments and care, and counsels of the client and family in meeting nursing and related needs. Remains up-to-date on new nursing skills and technology and utilizes the nursing process (observation, assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation) in the delivery of care. Performs duties in accordance with physician's orders, the Medical Center's policies, methods and techniques and coordinates with other departments and personnel. Provides leadership and promotes teamwork. When requested, participates in in-service programs, education programs, and orientation of new personnel. Demonstrate Standards of Excellence when other duties are assigned. Perioperative RN: Prepares instrumentation, supplies and equipment in timely preparation of OR and endoscopic procedures in accordance with departmental protocols, AORN standards and physician preference cards. Provides, performs, and accurately monitors conscious sedation maintaining drug titrations as directed by the physician and consistent with established policies and protocols. Independently performs the duties of circulating nurse including developing OR nursing care plans, accurate monitoring, positioning, prepping, bandaging, technical coordination of equipment and providing nursing leadership within the OR and/or procedure rooms. Completes timely, accurate and thorough nursing documentation including inter-operative documentation, patient health status and associated plans of care. Accurately and timely documents purchasing and procedural information for billing and depletion of materials and supplies. Performs, verifies, and documents the completions of "time outs" for all procedures. Demonstrates responsibility - independently taking associated evening and weekend call, responding timely and appropriately to call/urgent and emergency cases in accordance with department protocols. Prepares sterile field including assisting in setting up by opening sterile packs, instrumentation and completing appropriate counts in accordance with departmental protocols and AORN standards (RN scrubs only). Independently performs the duties of scrub nurse or assists the surgeon as directed while maintaining and supervising the integrity of the sterile field. Scrub RN: Independently prepares cases, the sterile field and surgical suite. Ensures the functionality of instrumentation and equipment in accordance with AORN, AST, and departmental policy. Assists in preparing patients for surgery including transport, positioning disinfecting and draping. When applicable, may perform skin closure with suturing. Ongoing competencies is required to perform this skill. Effectively supports the surgeon(s) by safely handling instrumentation, supplies and equipment, anticipating needs of the interoperative team. Completes room turnover, assists as needed in decontamination, sterilization and flashing of instrumentation and restocking of supplies. Actively supports department initiatives to promote efficient and safe patient flow utilization teamwork and taking individual accountability to complete duties as a means of ensuring early/on-time starts to maintain the OR schedule. Demonstrates initiatives and teamwork by restocking supplies, instrumentation, medications and assisting where needed. Provides topical medication administration when directed.
